The economical side of a woman’s character shines with radiance when slie succeeds in listening an eighteen inch belt on a twenty-two inch waist. A six year old innocent the other day hastily sought his mother’s pres ence to inform her that his mouth was turned wrong side out. He had been eating persimmons. Col. A. M. Speights, of Spartan- burgh, S. C., was in town Tuesday. Mr. Speights is an ex-Georgian, hav ing been years ago prominently en gaged in journalism in this State. Dr. L. S. Ledbetter has been very- sick at his home for more than a week past. He was, according to last reports, some better. AVe wish for him a speedy reeoA*ery. Mr. James K. M D nkl to repre sent Polk county at the annual con dition of the National Cotton Planters’ Association of America, to be held at Vicksburg, Miss., on the 21st of NoA*ember, instant. A change of schedule goes into ef fect on the E. & AV. Kailroad of Ala., on Sunday* next. Under the new ar rangement the morning- passenger train coining west arrives live min utes earlier while that going east leaves one hour and fifteen minutes later than heretofore. A. very heavy beating rain fell in these parts on Monday last. The ground Avas so very dry- and the rain fall was so rapid that the earth re ceived only a slight temjiomry wet ting. Many* planters took advantage of the brief season, however, to put in wheat. The demand for dAvellings about Cedartown seems to be increasing, ;.s also the price of rents. This augurs hoi>efully* fertile town. Some persons with the means ought to erect some cheap but comfortable houses for rent. There is more money in such an enterprise than in any other that conld be mentioned. AVe regret that, owing to the fact that we are behind with our paper this week because of excessive and unexpected demands upon our wtlftf- ing force, we must forego until next eek the noticing in a full and prop er manner of the death of Mr. Marion Sewell, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens of Polk county, Avhich occurred at his home on Thursday of last Aveeki An old gentleman named Camp bell, who lives on the Ledbetter place on Lake creek, while in town on Tuesday, lost somewhere on our streets a sum of money consisting of two ten dollar bills, that slipped from his vest pocket. If any one should find the money they would be doing the old man a great kind ness to restore it to him. He has orked hard for the amount and is needy. The series of meetings begun at the Methodist church several Sabbaths ago ceased at that church on Sabbath lit last, and has this week been progressing at the Presbyterian church, under the direction of the two able and popular ministers, Revs. Messrs. Mr. Kennard will officiate at Rome on that day. In this con nection, it should be stated that the railroad authorities are now* using the room recently occupied as the Episcopal chapel. This step was rendered necessary, since the office business of the road demands larger quarters, for proper attention there to. In the next issue notice of a temporary place of worship will be given. The Art Amateur for November gives a series of six admirable drawings by AValter Crane of the superb frieze, illustrating Longfellow’s “Skeleton in Armor,” recently painted by Mr. Crane for the Newport residence of Miss Catherine AVoIfe. A biographical notice of this popular artist is accompanied by* a portrait drawn by* him from his re flection in a mirror, by many exam ples of his Avork as an illustrator, and by a spirited drawing of his picture of “The Angel of Love Averting the Hand of Fate.” The designs for wood-carving, china painting, em broidery* and sketching on linen arc numerous and excellent. There is a profusion of hints and directions for art Avork, and the department of home decoration and finishing is abund antly* illustrated and filled Avitli prac tical suggestions. Dramatic and op eratic feuilletons form neAV and in teresting features ; the Munich, Lou- isA'illeand Cincinnati exhibitions are noticed, and Montezuma’s “Note Book” is as full as ever of readable paragraphs. A careful examination of this number Avill shoAA* that The Art Amateur’s claim to be the “best practical art magazine” lias a broad foundation. Price, 35 cents; per year, $4. Louisville Courier-Journal. ToAveriug aboA’e all the atrocities of fashion is the modern clutch now in the hey-dev of its existence. It is affected oil grand parades and prom enades, and lias superseded the coun try hand-in-hand march and the more rational style of the lady lean ing on the gentleman’s arm. To per form the clutch act successfully it re quires artistic ability of no mean or der ; the lady dressed, of course, in the height of fashion, Avulks along Avith modest mien and downcast eyes at a two-long-steps-and-ono- short-one gait, her right arm invert ed, throAving the elboAV on the right liip and the part that does the hujggr ing uppermost. This arm wabbles in a horizontal direction, back and forth listlessly, like the derrick of a dredge boat, being scrupulously held at the same atlitude. The left arm hangs by her side partly akimbo, so the band would about strike the “buckeye” in her trows- ers pocket were she at tired in masculine raiment, and place it in the same relation to her body as the handle is to a jug. Her escort, the A’oting population, of the party, clutches this arm midway be tAveen the elbow and the lower end of her shirt sleeve, and, holding her from him as far as possible, ambles along side way’s at a reel-footed pace, seemingly* determined to leave the indelible imprint of Ids manly fingers on her sluipely eoat-sleeA*e.
