Good crowds are nightly in at tendance and the pastime becomes more and more popular, as skillful skaters are developed, there being quite a number of ladies and gentle men who have mastered the art to a degree insuring much ease and grae of motion. Now that Christmas is near at hand again, the Sunday schools of Cedartown should consider the ques tion of proper entertainment for the children, who are wont to expect an nually from their elders some gener al recognition for faithfulness durin the year. Some have been led to suggest already the getting up of one general or a Christmas tree each for the several schools. We stated last week in our account of the trial and conviction of George Kirk that he was carried to Dade coal mines. His counsel having moved for a new trial, pending the hearing of the motion at the February term of the court, he was carried to Boine jail for safe keeping. Our statement was based on an impression that was general. We were in error in stating that Ratchford’s wife was not allowed to testify. It was Kirk’s wife who could not testify. In addition to the list published last week, we have been furnished by Miss Gay with the following list of contributions at this place to the Ste phens Monumental fund: Mrs L S Ledbetter, 50 cents ; J R Barber, 50 cents; W L McClain, $1 00; Mrs J M Brown, 25 cents; Mrs Thomas Burry, 25 cents; Little Waiter E. Goode, 25 cents; I T Mee, 50 cents ; Mrs J A Liddell, $1 00; Dr. Charles H Harris, 91 00. Our people were shocked yesterday morning that Robert Emmett Brews ter, second son of Rev. P. H. Brews ter, had accidentally killed himself, while hunting. We have not the full particulars, at this writing. It is supposed that the hammer of the gun was caught by a bush, causing the discharge. The entire load en tered the forehead, producing death almost instantly. He was about nineteen years of age.—Cross Plains Post. Our people will regret to learn that Prof. S. P. Snow will leave to-day for Atlanta, where he goes to accept a position with the well-known mu sic house of Phillips A Crew. Pi of. Snow is a gentleman whom Rome can ill afford to lose. He is a thor ough musician, an affable finished gentleman, and a public spirited, en terprising citizen. Messrs. Phillips A Crew have done well in securing the services of such a man. »For sev eral years past Prof. Snow has been principal instructor of the musical department of the Borne Female College and in that position he won golden opinions at home and abroad. To the best people of Atlanta we commend Prof. Snow, as a gentle man, worthy of their respect, confi dence and esteem.—Home Courier. utm Sentenced. Mastin Allread and Hope Mobli were, in the Superior Court last, wed;, convicted of kidnapping Mary, the daughter of Dick Ratchford, and were sentenced to the penitentiary, each, for five years. The trial lasted three days. We learn that counsel for the parties have moved for a new trial. i ‘ Court. Tfi.e adjourned term of Polk Supe rior Court was adjourned .on last Monday, owing to Judge Branham’s illness, it being his intention at first to hold a four weeks’ session, which would have included the .present week. rMuch business, we learn, was disposed of daring the term, and the (l^akets relieved of much of their -IffcAiensome load. The Supper Thursday Night. The supper at Philpots’ hall on Thursday night last (Thanksgiving) given by the members of the Presby terian church to assist in raising funds for the purchase of a new organ -ter the church, is reported an extra ordinary success. The crowd in at- dfeddance was one of the largest ever Seen at a like affair in our midst. The supper was bountiful and tempt- ihg, and ail in attendance seemed heartily Id’ enjoy the occasion. We learntbat the proceeds netted about seventy-five dollars. The ladies, who labored so earnestly and zealously for the success of the affair, deserve great-credit. Barn Burned. On last Sunday night the bam of Mr. G. W. Lindsey, in the southern suburbs of Cedartown, was burned. Mr. Lindsey was awakened about eleven o’clock by an alarm of fire, given by a negro. He arose and on going out observed the flames under great headway, the whole roof of the building being well enveloped. Dear Advertiser: A visitor wishes to give his opinions in white and black respecting Cedartown, with which he has fallen in love. One main reason is, “ one'drop of ink on a-agitary thought has moved the raindSofmillions,” and the resources undeveloped are sufficiently attract ive to allure sons of commerce, agri culture and mechanics, as well as thosanDlugirions proficients in the scieaoe and art of “ teaching the yoon$fldea how to shoot,” to your pleasantly located city. Every one attends to “his own business,” and has a business to attend to here. I seej^o dead-beats, no men come to the aty and study so hard about this world aiid the next, or both, as to get giddy-heade !,and to seem like what, in ante helium days, were dubbed drunk. ■ No, not a word of it in Ce dartown, thank heaven 1 The mer- chantoien are ail afloat, right side up, energetic, strictly honest, and straight as a shingle. King cotton parades the streets, not carpeted with silk at this juncture of the game, however. Main street, from the me tropolitan depot, will, ere long, be second to none for beauty. While we are touching the isle of beauty permit the remark : Visitor has seen the snow-capped towers, North, Florid vales, South; refinement of the East, and the undulating plains of matted spires and blossoming ver dure, exalted grandeur, and inimita ble chivalry of the far West; be it modestly, yet truly affirmed, that, “in Cedartown, State of Georgia, and the county of Polk, are the most mu sical, lovely, refined and attractive blooms that ever fluttered on the boWer of “sweet sixteen,” while the gay Napoleons and Alexanders the Great are energetic, handsome, and pure. Education here, Visitor perceives, is on the tiptoe, every fac ulty alert, and good, efficient steers men at the helm of erudition; so wi anticipate liappy results in future, when these self-sacrificing, God lov ifig philanthropists in the persons of -ofessore Noyes, Harris, and the •pure, devoted-female departments, H-hall have been aided by generous public patronage, and every opposi tion held in Check by a Herculean, ^ inereiftaiminiitration of i u' lie school system.
