Another Fire Sunday.
Tifton, Ga., Nov. 6.—The
ton Knitting Mills burned
evening at G :80 o’clock. Tho ma¬
chinery and building, valued at
812,000, were owned, by a stock
company, of which H. li. Tift
owned the contrt iling interest,
The fire was unquestionably
the work of an incendiary. A
negro man pafcs &dL by a negro
woman’s house near the plant
and got some’'matches, claiming
that he hud lost* a' razor,
Went in the direction of the build-
ing, and in less than five minutes
the building was in flames. The
negro is known and lives in Tif¬
ton, Oil was used in firing the
building. Nothing was saved
and there was no insurance.
If took hard work to save ad¬
joining buildings.
While the knitting mills were
burning and citizens were at the
fire, some party or parties were
attempting to burgalize i)r. Geo.
Smith’s drug store. Mr. J. E.
Cochran, who has a jewelry de¬
partment in the store, happened
Jo enter the store and discovered
several auger holes bored through
planks of the floor. Ilis footsteps
frightened the would-be robbers
away. The tool used, or auger,
was found in tHe cellar, where
they were trying to effect, an en-
trance. Entrance into the cellar
was made by a hole in the ground
at the rear entrance of the store.
The Parker Drug Company’s
store was entered by breaking
open glass transom over the side
door. Just what was stolen has
not been found out vet.
