The Mauk Baptist Church has been in existence for over half
a century. It was organized by the Rev. William “Billy” Al
lison of Buena Vista in 1900. He preached in the homes of the
Mauk people on Saturdays and Sundays.
Charter members included
Jim and Mary Layfield, Levin-
ous and Joe Wisham, Mary Jane
Franklin, J. L. and Cindy Whit
ley, Mr. and Mrs. George Wish
am, Ed Wisham, Willis Wisham,
Henry Wisham, Nancy Wisham,
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Street-
man, Mr. and Mrs. J. M, Whit
ley, Ben and Mattie Pike, John
and Bobbie Nixon and Charlie
Wells.
The first actual structure of
the church was a brush arbor
built by the Rev. Jesse Wade
and located near Watson’s Mill
which is several miles from
where the present church now
stands. A brush arbor is a
shelter of which the walls and
roof are formed by brush. It
keeps out the sun and a little
of the rain.
A Rev. Rowe of Odessadale
built the first solid structure.
It was a log house, which was
maned Harmony Baptist
Church. Later this log house
was sold and used for a barn.
In 1906, Mrs. Elizabeth Mauk
donated the land for a Baptist
and a Methodist Church to be
built in the town of Mauk. The
two Churches faced each other
and Wall Street.
However, the Baptist Church
must not have been a very sturdy
structure for it was blown over
by a wind storm in 1910. Ser
vices were held in the school-

It’s Time For A Change
I’ll Take My Stand
by Howard H. ‘Bo’
Callaway
The mess in Washington is positive evidence that it’s time for a change. Geor
gia has been kicked around long enough. The wild eyed liberals of the demo
crat party led by Rep. John Blatnik of Minnesota, Adam Clayton Powell and
Emanuel Cellar of New York have sworn to “drive the Conservative Democrats
out of the party.” Columbus Enquirer, Saturday, October 2, 1964).
Now is the chance for us to stand up
for our principles. Now is the chance to
vote for your rights and a stronger posi
tion for Georgia in our national affairs.
Join me in my fight for strength for Geor
gia, and with your help, we can bring
about the change needed to return our
freedom and national honor.
