when his eyes widened and he
gave a gasp* He startled me and
I jumped. “What’s wrong,”
I asked. “Nothing,” he re
plied as he laid down my x-
ray. “You ca go,” he said.
I went home and got some
milk and a sandwich to tide me
over before dinner. I settled
down on the living room couch
and began watching a baseball
game. About a half hour later
the phone rang and I answered it.
“Hello, this is Dr. Ranow. I
called to tell you that after you
left this morning I carefully
checked your x-rays and found
out that your heart has been
punctured slightly. The punc
ture is becoming larger and will
soon cause your heart to stop
beating.” “Gosh,” I gasped.
“Will I die?” “Well, I’m afraid
you will,” the doctor replied.
My heart began to beat faster
and I started to perspire. I
stood there, too shocked to
speak, but I finally managed to
ask, “How much longer do I
have?” The doctor answered,
“About five minutes.” “Five
minutes!” I yelled frantically.
I slammed the phone back on
the hook and ran to get the
Bible and paper and a pencil.
I wanted to write a note tell
ing mom and dad how much
I loved them. I hurriedly scrib
bled some words and noticed
that I had only three minutes left
that I had only three minutes

sat down on the couch. I be
gan reading as fast as I could,
thinking mybe I could die read
ing about God’s word. I had
finished only about half a page
when I noticed I had only a
minute left. I fell on my knees
and tried vainly to pray, but
my mind kept drifting back to
the clock. I glanced at the
clock. I had only fifteen se
conds left and time was slowly
passing by. I began to cry.
Now only ten seconds and 1
began to pray again. Five
seconds and I lay on the floor,
prepared to die. Then my
time was up, but nothing hap
pened. I got up and for some
reason looked at the calendar,
and. . .why, today was April
Fool’s Day!

FIVE MINUTES TO LIVE
The doctors told him that she
had only five more minutes to
live. Yes, in only five minutes
his love would be gone.
He had so much to tell her,
but what could he say. Well,
anyway, he’d try to tell her how
he felt.
As he entered the room he
saw her lying there. It was as
if she were an Angel on a white
cloud. Did she know that she
was going to die? No, the doc
tors thought it best not to tell
her, but she knew anyway.
There was that look of sweet
peace on her face. How he
loved that face. He must
look at it carefully now, me
morize all the parts. For
this would be the last time
he’d see it. He took one of
her hands and held it tight.
How small it was in his own.
He told her of his love for
her and of her great beauty.
And now time, life, love, every
thing was almost gone. Surely
it must have been gone for her
hand had grown cold.

FIVE MINUTES TO LIVE
A fire crackled in the huge
red-brick fireplace. I sank into
a chair and watched the crim
son flames leap into the air.
Many nights I had sat here this
way, watching the fire and lis
tening to the sounds of this
lonely house. Loneliness is a
terrible thing. It engulfs you
and leaves you empty. I
sat there for quite a while think
ing scattered thoughts.
Then 1 looked at the little
empty bottle in my hand. Was
it worth it, I asked myself. I
pondered on this for awhile.
I had no courage—that’s why
I was doing this. I didn’t
have the courage to live alone.
But the another thought came to
me—Had I ever had the courage
to STOP being alone? Had I
ever tried to meet people and
make friends? No, I was a
coward, taking the easy way
out. I knew the drug was al
ready taking effect on me. I
had wasted part of my valuable
time thinking these thoughts,
but now I must get help. I
wanted another chance at life.
I still had a chance if I could
hurry. I stumbled from the
chair and headed for the phone.
My legs went weak and I fell.
I dragged myself to the phone
table and reached for the phone.
I could barely see the dial.
My drugged mind caused the
phone to look as if it were
floating in a mass of fog. I
snatched up the receiver and
managed to dial the operator.
A voice said, “Operator, may
I help you?”
I could barely talk but I slur
red out a few words, “Helpme,
please! I don’t want to d--!”
The phone slipped from my
hand to the floor.
