UNNEIGHBORLY ESt APADE.
The Clarksville Advertiser last week con.
tained an article.'aimed at the Toccoa News
for the purpose of diverting advertising from
its columns. This week it follow’* it up with
an editorial containing personal and untruth¬
ful abuses of its editor, with no other appa-
reut motive except the avowed object of get¬
ting advertisements that are likely to go the
News. As regards the county printing, what¬
ever rivalry there maybe, the editor of the
News intended, on his part, that itshould.be
honorable and friendly. He lias had only the
most friendly feelings towards the editors
Advertiser: he has both privately and in print
on every suitable occasion spoken of them and
their paper in kind and commendatory words.
Of this unneighborly escapade of theirs, and
es[>ec'ially of this uncalled for personal attack
on the editor, lie hitherto believed them in¬
capable, as he supposed them honorable gen¬
tlemen. lie e.euies that be “lose-t no op¬
portunity to laud his own paper and himself
to the ski s, as the ne plus u.tra of everything
that, is goad and great in country
journalism,’’ or that lie lias ever in the remot-
c-t degree either “by implicat on” or other¬
wise attempted “to detract from, or pull down
othes;” such a b; se idea Iks never entered
his head or liis heart. On the contrary, he
ling a very high estimate of ti e ability’ and
energy displayed by his neighbor editors all
around, and in reading their thoughts from
week to week lias learned to esteem and love
them as brothers. He ^acknow ledges that a
want of enterprise manifest in the Advertiser,
has not escaped his notice; the chief aim of
the publishers seeming to be to control all
the county printing if possible, and to fill their
local, even their editorial columns with adver¬
tisements.
As regards the circulation of the Advertiser
the editor of theNmvs is not entirely ignorant,
lie has it within a very close approximation
before him in cold print, from the highest au¬
thority, tlic accuracy of which is not disputed.
The proposition to have the subscription
looks of the two papers examined by a com
mitteof gentlemen, implies that the publish,
ers are not gentlemen, and is a stale ruse, now
rarely resorted to by honorable newspaper
men. The bdoks of the News are ojxm at all
times to t lie inspection of the county olficials
and all advertisers. The editor greatly regrets
this unfriendly manifestation on the part
his neighbors, which he did not begin and
has no desire or inclination to continue.
