Weather beautifully bright and
warm.
o
H. R. Cannon of Tallulah, was^ in
town on Sunday last.
Cicero Blalock,the gentlemanly tax
collector of Rabun county was the
busiest man we know of on Friday
last.
II. A^Keener of Persimmon was in
town on Monday last, rushing around
in a brand new road cart, and smiling
all over his face.
There were two white horses in
town on last Monday and nary a red¬
headed woman. Are all signs going
to fail in this warm and dry Decem¬
ber?
Saturday last was the day for let¬
ting the building of the public- bridge
across the Tallulah River at Burton’s
store. The town presented quite a
lively appearance with all tho mer¬
chants doing a rushing busines.
Wonder what the Rev. Tra Hicks
thinks about Ins prophecy of the
weather for December? To use the
chaste and elegant language of Arte-
meus Ward, the Nkws thinks he has
busted.
On Saturday last we noticed*!!. B.
Ritchie, J. M. Ritchie, L. Arrendale,
JL C. Blalock, Cicero Blaloc.k, Edw.
itton and A. G. Dillard in town,
’heso are all representative men of
his county, and were taking a great
iterest in the public bridge lotting.

j TOCCOA,
On Saturday evening last the edi-
itorofthe CUnton Edition of the
Nkws and Bro. J. Marsengill conciu-
valley of the Little Tennessee. Hav-
lag Obtained a horse of Bro.J.IXanp-
ston, a road cart of Bro. S. A. Beck
and a harness of Mr. T. II. Jones, we
started as meirily as a marriage bed,
and all went as swimmingly ... as a bath , ,
in the Elysian sea, ’ until we reached
the , lane , just . beyond , YV\ m T. Yorks, , r , ,
when , a hog I in • .1 the corner of r ,| the fence, e
being actuated, in tho opinion of the
scribe,by the same spirit that inspired
a number of his race to drown them-
seves in the Sea ofGallilee, soine cen-
turies since, jumped up with the most
terribly hideous “ugh/’ and caused
our milk white steed to suddenly
bound to one side, like a ball that has
just come in contact with a base ball
bat m full swing, and then he started
away from there like he thought that
the veritable Prince of Darkness was
grabbing at his heels. Tam O’Shan-
ter’s celebrated mare never ran half
as fast. 1 he scribe was handling the
ribbons, and Bro. Marsengill, think-
ins, he could do better, reached over
and took the lines and threw his itn-
mense weight • ir against • them and , shout i ,
ed “Whoa!” in a voice of thunder, and
then another scene in the drama oc-
curred; our Pegasus began kicking ,Y
like one possessed, , and 1 sending „ n , lin „ the
the footboard of the cart flying by
our heads in the form of kindling
wood. Brother Marsengill ... remarked , ,
that x . , he ... believed , , he would get ....... out as
he didn’t like to ride in a road cart no
how, and he got. As he hit the ground
the , scribe , turned , his i head i ana r saw a
performance f i by n Bro. r. Maiaengul ’ll tn-t
was snrnrisiiur P. in a ‘ man of his ‘ steadi-
ness. First he s.ood on his heels.then
sat down on his shoulder, then stood
on his head, and then turned over pn-
tirely • endways, his arms and legs
pounding . the and empty .
vague ,air,
like the arms of . a mowing . machine, i • _
the whole interspersed with a series
of the most hideous grunts that ever
tell . ,, on a sad , and . shuddering , , . . ear. T In
the meanwhile the milk white steed
was putting in 2.40 time up the road,
and the serioe concluded he had bet-
ter get out and see what was the mat-
ter with Bro.Marsengill. He did so,and
strange ° to relate, ’ he"eclipsed r tho per- r
formauce of Bro. Marsengill by a
large majority; he did pretty much
the same thin os, but he did them a
great deal faster and lots more of it.
In the meanwhile the horse and cart.
where «ere they? They were about a
mile from there on the side of the road,
all turned wrong side out, the gears,
not the horse, and hung up in a crab
annle S bush W« nut \ the horse in a
stable , , and pursued our sad . and . soli-
