FLIMSY EXCUSES.
The numerous instances of mob
violence that have occurred receritlv.
especially in the South, have called
tiie attention of the press to this dau-
£orous practice.
Some editors boldly denounce
lynching, under all circumstances,
an outrage law and society;
cthers speak of it in a mealy-mouthed
way; a few openly say that death at
the hands of a mob is the Tirnner '‘A

Swift punishment is not so severe
as a penalty tliat is iiilhctvd after the
jni'l'.y one has been Je t rived of lib-

eometitiie.
Another excuse for lynching is the
uncertainty of the law. It is per¬
haps true that guilty persons who are
brought bolero the courts sometimes
escape punishment, but is it not
t.ioro reasonable te believe that jus¬
tice will be meted out by a few un¬
prejudiced, calm men who luve
sworn to do their duly, than by a bet-,
erogeneous mass of humanity drawn
together by passion and no more

Morally and legally, the people
have no more riofit to take the Jaw
