It followed right along by the side of

the other passengers to it. Everyone
saw it just as plainly as L did, so it
could not have been an hallucination.
“The spectre kept pace with the
train, ami, wonderful to relate, would
imes run a little ahead, cross the
f **ack in lront of the engine, and run
along the other side. Then it would
dirappear altogether for awhile, bnt to

“Oh, that’s a made up thing, or you

exclaimed. “No doubt you; who profess
to believe in <he existence of ghosts,
think it was the kmtukvkd ‘departed

his life on that railroad!”
“My dear girl, do not be so ironical
upon a subject so solemn, for I assure
you this thing was there. We saw it
—all of us—and it was—the public
hoad !”
***
No subject is discussed with more
variations than “Woman’s Eights,” the
“Fiihancipation of Women," or what¬
ever term suits you best, and there is
much to be said on both sides of it;
hut I hold that women are more pow¬
erful where they now stand than they
would be out in the world where men
would oppose rather than go with or
be guided by them. Why not be con¬
tent with the power behind the throne?
The best thing, to my mind, which I
have seen on the subject is found in a
letter from Mon's. Joseph do Maistre to
his daughter Constance, written about
the first of this century. I will trans¬
late it from the French for the benefit
of my readers:
“You ask, my dear child, why wom¬
en are condemned to mediocrity. You
ask me the reason of a thing which
does not exist, and which I never said.
Women are never condemned to me¬
diocrity; Giey may re ? en aspire to the
sublime, but to the i'emixine sublime.
Each being ought to keep liis place
and not affect other perfections than
those which belong to him. I have
here a dog which makes great sport for
us, yet if he should take a notion to
have himself bridled and saddled to
carry me into the country, I should be
as little pleased with him as I would
be with your brother’s English horse
if he should jump up on my knees or
take coffee with me; The mistake of
certain women is in imagining that,
to be distinguished, they ought to be
so after the manner of men. There is
no greater mistake. It is the dog and
the horse.
