cotton, and that our buyers intend
paying a good price for it. Toccoa has
been for several years a good chiton
market, and it \, ill continue to he one.
There is no need for farmers in this
section to haul cotton a long distance
to market, when they can bring it to
Toccoa, and get a good p ice Tov it and
find what merchandise they heed right
here.
Temperance Convention.
The semi-annual convention of the

Temperance Union Wilt be held n ..the

cotton bolls will rot. On the bottoms
high water has played havoc with crops.

riant corn and fine cot toir on- these
bottoms have been completely submer-
ged by the freshet, and these will be
almost an entire loss. S&v'eral of our
citizens who own land on lugaio are
lqsers by the heavy rains. The crops
ou the river were fine,and U Mr almost
total destruction will fall heavily upon
many, some of whom can ill Afford to
bear this loss. ,
Farmers in this section are fee'ing
somewhat “blue”.

Not much civil bir ihess of impor¬
tance was disposed of, hut criminal
cases have occupied the attention of
the court since Wednesday of last week.
W- have been unable to obtain the full
proceedings of eouri; but give below a
list of some of the cases :
In the case of L. B. Deaton, charged
with murder, a mistrial was made, the
jury standing ten for acquittal and
two for conviction, lie was placed
under Y$2,0pQ> bond, which was quickly
made by his relatives,
Mrs. Fannie E. Denham, who threw
vitriol in (lie face of Mrs. Frank
Hughes, o*' this place, was sentenced to
the chain-gang for twelve months,
I I. B. Wyman, t he poeile jail ...bird,
who destroyed the wearing apparel of
a b’male living near Soquo, received
a sentence Of twelve inodths in the pen-

Morgan Verner died . at his . home
. in this place Monday last, after

illness of several weeks with typhoid
fever. On Tuesday his remains were
interred in Sunshine grave yard, in the
country, several miles from here.
Mr. Verner,yhis about 23 years of age
and bis family ccnsistec of himself and
wife. For sometime he was an em-
I$oye of the furniture factory and had
rrtany friends among the operatives.
He was an unassuming man, but com¬
manded the respect of his associates.
His death is regretted by our citizens,
whose sympathy go ou 1 to the bereaved
wife in this time of her great sor
row.

Miss Blonde Capps on Wednesday
left Toceba to take charge, of a school
near Hawkinsvilie. She is a graduate
of I.aGrange Female College and is

Mr. W. C. Edwards returned home
sick Wednesday afternoon. While in
Spartanburg S. C., he was attacked
with heart trouble and had a .serious
