A Big (Tun Loaded With Great Bargains! i
A Great Sale,.the Offerings of Which will Surprise You
More When You See the Goods than Words Can Convey.
in SOCIETY’S DOMAIN and
Personal Paragraphs About People You Know
A social was given by Miss
Mamie Gilmer to her friends at the
Edwards House Friday evening.
The occasion was greatly enjoyed
by all present.
Hon. Lewis Davis arrived from
Perry, Oklahoma territory, last
Friday night, to the delight of
many friends. Mr. Davis holds a
position under the federal govern¬
ment. He will remain two or
three weeks longer.
Mr. T. C. Vickery, one of Toc
coa’s substantial and popular busi
ness men, wili buy cotton in Eiber
ton this fall. He used to spend the
season in Elberton, several years
ago, and numbers his friends here
by the score—Elberton Star.
Miss Mamie Swift, of Elberton
and Miss Faith Dorsey, of Atlanta
visited Miss Annie Lee Freeman
this week.
Miss Maude Netherland left
Tuesday for Greenville, S. C.. to
complete her college course.
A young folks’ social was given
at the home of Miss Coralie Mc
Avoy Tuesday night, in honor of
her friend Miss Maude Davis of
Birmingham, Ala., who has been
visiting Toccoa for the past month
or so. A social was also given at
the Edwards house last Friday
evening to a few friends of Miss
Mary Gilmer.
Rev. B. F. Searcy of Avalon,
will fill Rev. Dillard’s pulpit
next Sunday at the Methodist
Church.
Miss Nora West, of Clarkes
vilie, the pretty sister of Mrs. J. B.
Jones, returned home with Mrs.
Jones Saturday. Mrs. Jones and
her little daughter spent two
weeks very pleasantly' with her
parents, Dr. and Mrs. West at
Ciarkesville.
Prof. Perry was a visitor to the
Exposition last week.
Mr. W. C. Allen was called to
Buford Monday to attend the fu¬
neral of his aged mother, who
had died the day previous.
One of the sad features of the re¬
cent change on the Elberton Air
Line is the reduction in rank of
Col. James} Wilson, formerly Sur
perintendent of the division. Col.
Wilson has spent the best years of
his life in the service of the road,
and now in his old age it is really
painful to see him pulling the
throttle of a freight engine. Here’s
our hat off to “Uncle Jimmie,”
faithful to his duty now as ever,
honored still bv^all who know him
Long may & wave!—Hartwell
Sun.
Judge Estes of Gainesville and
Col. Jno. W. Owen went to Cames
ville Monday to attend superior
eport. Col. Owen has probably
tbe largest law practice in
lin couhty of any lawyef
I outside the county.
Col.*Jho..W. Owen would make
an excellent Judge for the City
Court that is spoken of for our
county. . _
Epworth League.
According to the call published
in the last week's Times, qu|*te a
large audience gathered at the
Methodist Church last Monday
evening to organize an Epworth
League, which is an auxiliary of
the Methodist church. Mr. J. B.
Simmons was elected president,
Prof. Perry first vice president,
Mrs. J. B. Simmons and Miss Ola
Jones were elected second and
third vice presidents, respectively.
E. J. Chsisty was elected secretary
and Howell Cox treasurer.
The next meeting will be
Monday evening at 7 530 o’clock
at the church and those desiring
to become members are requested
to attend.
Rev. Jackson of Hartwell will
address the league Monday even¬

Somewhat Wrong.
We notice a communication in
the Ciarkesville Advertiser this
week criticising an article which
appeared in The Times of a week
or so ago in which we said that
“a man who would sign a petition
asking the court to reduce a sen¬
tence does not deserve to live in
a civilized community.” The cor¬
respondent quotes the above para¬
graph, but he fails to say any¬
thing about the closing lines of
sai^ article, which is “Do not let
your sympathy get the better of
your judgment.”
This paragraph explains the
whole article. The people would not
be prudent to prosecute a man for
breaking the law and then ask the
Judge toreduce the fine. This ap¬
plies of course as a general rule.
We think there afe cases where
the fivne is excessive, as was prob¬
ably that of W. E. Acre, at last
court. ,
In our law courts let us have
justice tempered with mercy, but
let the judge sitting be the judge
of what justice is in such a case.
The correspondent alluded to above
seems to think we are rath er hard
on Mr. Acre, and said article was
a Strike at Mr. Acre. He is en¬
tirely wrong; we will never be
found trying to break up a man and
force his family on the street, but
we will always try po help him,
but at the same time we will
be found at all time* actively
supporting the law for the good of
society._

the medicine the doctor left for

A Would-be Contemporary.
We hope our merchants and bus
iness men generally will heed the
advice given them in a little item in
the last issue of the Times, and put
their advertisements in the paper,
inviting the patronage of farmers
and others. That will suit us ex¬
actly, as it is a well known and
generally accepted fact that there
is but one real paper in Toccoa—
the News. So, proceed to plant
your crop of advertisements, breth¬
ren, and do it at once.
The above is from our Svould-be
contemporary—-the News. The
News is too small in every
ular for us to notice only to say
the merchants of ToCcoa know
a newspaper when they see it,hence
they put their ads. where they will
do them good. Compare the News
with The Times as to any and all
kinds of news and then compare
the advertising columns With same
and see which is the newspaper of
Toccoa. Brother Christy’s knowl¬
edge as to what constitutes a good
laper has been woefully neglected,
if he calls his paper anything more
than a mere boys’ and girls’ juve¬
nile journal. We do not expect to
engage in any dirty spats at The
News, and the best thing to do
with an object that is rotten is
to let it alone, which we will
hereafter do with The News.
We acknowledge the fact that
The News is a moderately good
boys’ and girls’ weekly.
We are not finding fault with
Brother Christy for he is getting
out the best paper lie is competent
of publishing.
