Personal Paragraphs About People You Know
In the twilight the woman leaned
back in her low chair and listened
to a man’s voice with? a pain in her
heart, while the rain beat outside
and the wind sighed as if tired of
its restlessness.
“We have been friends a long
time,” he was saying, ‘‘and your
marriage has made no difference.”
“My marriage has made no dif¬
ference,” she said, and turned to
drop another lump of sugar in her
tea.
“Perhaps,” he 6 aid;“ perhaps if
I had been your lover, I could not
thus be your friend after you mar¬
ried. but friendship such as ours,
has been a real friendship, has it
not?” and as he finished speaking
he laid his brown hand on one of
hers nearest him.
“A friendship of long standing,”
she replied, and her fingers
round his hand as though
liked the strength of it.
“That is why,” he continued,”
have told you all this over the
cups this afternoon. We
been such friends that I know
feel with me in all that gives
joy or pain-—am I conceited in
ing you > this?”
“You know that you are not,
all that interests my friends
of necessity interest me.”
turned and faced her in the
light and his strong man’s
broke as he asked the question :
“Beforeher answer came,
gazed silently at the tiny imp’s
faces that mocked her from the
dying coals in the grate and from
them down at the lemon in
tea. Then she said slowly, as
though hating her words because
they brought pain to him. “She
could not have Itfved you.”
Her friend had risen to hia feet
and stood with an arm resting up¬
on the mantel shelf beside him.
As she finished speaking be bit
his underlip and forced a smile.
“And yet”, said be, such is
perversity that there is for me,
just that one woman or none.”
The woman set her cup down
and in her eyes a shadow
lay, but she looked into * her
companion’s face and said, I wish
it were in my power to help yon,
for yon know that I would, don’t
you?” little
“You have been my friend
a long time and I know that could
you do aught to help me you surely
would. After aU, though, what
have you, a favored child of for¬
tune to do with Love’s strife and
its madness?” hia voice bad dropped
until it n whisper.

The society which was recently
proposed to promote spiritual
growth and a better knowledge of
the Bible was thoroughly organized
last Friday evening, when the con¬
stitution and by-laws were adopted.
The officers of this society have
been elected for six months, and
are as follows: E. P. Simpson,
President; H. M. Dillard, Vice
President; E. J. Christy, Secre
tary and Treasurer; Miss Carrie
Davenport, Librarian. The Presi¬
dent will appoint, at the next
meeting, an executive committee,
which will take charge of outside
questions concerning the good of
the society. There is an excellent
library belonging to the club, and
as the two hours given to the
meeting# wilt be divided equally
between the study and free discus*
sion of the Sunday school 1<
for the following Sunday^ and the
reading and discussion of home ex¬
cellent book, the society cannot
but be both interesting and very
instructive. The book which is
being read at present is “Marime
tha,” by Brooks. Both sexes over
16 yeare of age are eligible to
membership, if they be interested
in the study of the Bible and litera¬
ture pertaining thereto, and are
really desirous of a spiritual growth.
These meetings are to be held once
a week, on Friday evening, and
will begin promptly at 7130, at
present, and will continue till 9 *,30
o’clock.

There ip too much jobbery going
on between certain officers of our
state courts, which only makes

passed by which there wilt be
no opportunities remaining for di¬
