A chemical journal warns phar¬
macists and all others who have oc¬
casion to display anything in the
nature of a lens in their windows
that as the season changes the sun's
rays may fall directly into windows
which they did not reach during the
preceding season, and therefore it
would be well to bear in mind the
possibility of fire being kindled
through this agency and take pre¬
cautions accordingly, That the
show globes in a druggist's window
are capable of acting as “burning
glasses" is proved by one case in
which the woodwork of a window
was effectually charred by the sun¬
light concentrated on it through a
globular show bottle. -

We have spent the past few days reading up on the man
who will not patronize home industry and we find in the
Good Book that such a man is no good either to himself or
anybody else. The man who will not subscribe for his>
home paper and get his job work done at home will never
read his titles cler to anything. He is doomed to be cast
into outer darkness, where the worm dieth not. Selah !

How It Aided Science In Astronomical
Observations.
In Greenwich park, about six
miles from London, on the banks
of the beautiful Thames, stands a
palace, one of the finest in England,
built by Inigo Jones, a celebrated
English architect. It was once the
residence of royalty, but has since
been used as a comfortable home for
aged seamen of the British navy,
Back of stands the palace, building on a hill in the
park, r able ’ a ° not remark-
for beauty, but for use, the
Greenwich observatory, from whence
British ships sailing on every sea
take their latitude and longitude.
It is also used for astronomical ob¬
servations.
Some years ago an extraordinary
phenomenon was known to take
place in the heavens on a certain
day, and the astronomers of the
were anxious for a scientific
observation. A new and more pow-
erful telescope was made for the
purpose, there being none supposed
of sufficient power to watch and in-
vestigate satisfactorily this wonder-
ful phenomenon. As the time ap-
proached the faculty was gathered
in the observatory, and telescopes
were arranged for observation. The
time drew near minute by minute
and expired. Nothing of the ex-
peeted phenomenon was or could be
seen through the new and best tele-
scope, to the utter amazement of
the astronomers.
But one astronomer made use of
an old, unused telescope, perhaps
expecting little if anything. To the
astonishment of the others, this
gentleman with the old instrument
exclaimed, “J see it!" After their
observations were ended a thorough
examination of the old instrument
commenced. Nothing unusual in
construction of the telescope was
found, but it was observed that a
spider had gained admittance to the
interior aud had spun a web cover-
ing the hollow space. Since then
all telescopes have a net of the very
finest material inserted in a certain
position in the instrument. — St.

The Work of a Chinese Emperor.
Shuntsing, the last emperor of
the Mongol race, described as an
effeminate prince, with the physiog¬
nomy of a monkey, was a man of
great mechanical skill and amused
himself with making models of au¬
tomata and timepieces.
His chief work was a machine
contained in a box 7 feet high and
Sy 2 feet wide, with three small tem¬
ples on top. In the middle temple
were fairies holding characters sig-

In y the side , temples . were repre¬
sentations of the sun and moon re¬
spectively, and from these places
genii issued, crossing a bridge to
the middle temple and after seem¬
ingly ascertaining the time of the
day from the fairies returned again
to their quarters. It is thought
that the motions were effected by
strings.
Crossing a field one day a man
was pursued by an angry bull. He
made for the fence, but soon discov-
ere a t h at t h e bull was overtaking
him. He then began to run round
4 haystack in the field, and the bull
pursued him, but in making the
short circles rouud the stack he was
the faster, and instead of the bull
catching him he caught the bull and
grabbed him by the tail with a firm
gr i p a nd a controlling one., He be-
g an to kick the bull, and the bull
bellowed with agony and dashed
across t h e field, with the man hang-
[ n g to his tail and kicking him at
everv jump, and as they flew along
he yelled at the bull: “Bother you!
Who began this fight?"
Chess In Japan.
Not only are there a great num-
ber of pieces and moves in Japanese
chess, but their value changes. For
instance, on reaching the enemy's
camp promotion ensues, and cap-
tured pieces are re-entered under
various conditions. In fact, the
game demands, if that were possible,
more undivided attention than Eu-
ropean chess and in its provisions
and contingencies, especially the lat-
ter, is strictly military. The pieces,
agreeable to the enrolling of prison-
ers, are all of one color. Chess has
alwavs held considerable position in
