As the school is of most importance
to ail we will hereafter make hii effort
to have a regular school column, and to
this column is wanted all sorts of
geslions and items from the teachers
and the school friends. -Eds.
The school received several calls
week which were much appre-
Dr. and Mrs. Davis, Mr.
and Mrs. E. P. Simpson, Mr. A.
I. Branham, Mrs. Fowler, Mr. B.
p. Brown Mrs. Kilgo, Kev. W.
Lee IIarreil,and Mr. Nelms. Mr
Branham made an interesting
Wednesday morning. He spoke of
the world’s ueed of skilled intellect,
the pecuniary reward for compe-
tent men, and the possibilities be-
fore the children of the present
day. Visits are a source of inspi¬
ration to teachers as well as to pu-
piU.
What Shakespeare said of music
is nowhere better illustrated than
in a school body. Vocal music, be¬
sides cultivating the liner feelings
of human nature, aids very much
in school government ; it gives a
very happy expression to that rest-
lessness that otherwise might find
vent in whispering. The pupils
seem to be very loud of our nation¬
al songs.
•
From an enrollment of two bun-
dred and twelve the average atten¬
dance last month was two hundred
and eight.
Frank Edwards makes a good
drum major. The pupils ^fep in
perfect accord with his tap.
Zack Williams, our janitor, is a
negro of the old type in other
words, he is an aristocratic darkey.
School closes May 23. Ex-Gov-
ernor Northern has been invited to
deliver the address this year. The
commencement exercises have been
restricted to the graduating class.
The standard for graduation hat
been made much higher this year,
The class of 1902, however, is a
good one. Class recitations, the
weekly written examinations and
the final written examinations will
determine the promotions, The
eighth grade are studying the part
of physical geography that treats
of winds, cyclones and tornadoes,
(strong recitations dont you know)
Simultaneous quadratic equations
have the attention of the ninth
grade.
The teachers have accomplished
a great deal in teaching drawing
this year. A greater benefit might
be obtained by adopting a system
ot art study. Art is an expression
of the healthful in nature; or what
would be as beautiful as nature if
it were nature. Physically the
whole progress of the human iace
is toward beauty ; from the earliest
creature ol the prehistoric ages till
today, one procession in the line of
physical beauty. What is highest
and best in physical beauty is cun-
conimittant with spiritual beauty.
To he able to see the beautiful, en-
j »y the beautiful and give expro—
Hion to the beautiful, is what lifts
man from the mire of gross mate-
ri.lity into spiritual life.
The following are topics f«»r
study Ht the teachers’ meeting this
week :
Tlie relation of the teacher to pa-
rents of his pupils :
1. The teacher should carefully
cultivate cmuvaie the me social social side siae of or his nis na*
ture. 2. He should seek frequent
opportunities of social intercourse
with his patrons. 3. He should be
willing to explain all his plans to
the oarents ot his pupils. 4. The
teacher should encourage parents
frequently to visit the school. No
efforts should be in ide before visi-
tors that are not made every day in
regular duties Show the work in
its true light, the backward pupils
as well as the bright ones. 5. The
teacher should be frank in all bis
representations to parents concern-
ing their children. 6. The teacher 1
