A Vihx Grogshop.- Bear io« wUueHa if
I exaggerate when I say, that the country
ia one vast giogahop, to which nearly half
a million of its youth are yearly introduced,
and over whose threshold sixty thousand
are annnally carted to a drunkard a.grave.
The streets of our cities echo to the shouta
and oaths of drunken revellers, from whom
society,seeks protection through police reg
ulation**; and within hovel & mansion alike,,
not sutirely smothered either by physical
fear or social pride, is heard the- sound of
insane violence and wailing. "W hat river
is there along oui coasts, what harbor upon
whose shores a city stands, whose waters
have not closed over the bodies of those'
who, victims to this traffic, were flung by
violent hands from pier or bridge, or mad**
Iy sought beneath their silent surface for-»
getfullnees of woos or wretchedness too
terrible to be borne ? Within the dark'
ness of dungeons and along our highways*
may be seen wrecks of former beauty and
manhood wrought by this traffic, and now

The Folly of Pride.— ‘After all,’ says the
late Sidney Smith, ‘take some quiet, sober
moment, of life, and add together the two
ideas <sf pride, and of man: behold him
creature of span high, stalking through in
finite space in all the grandeur of littleness.
Perched on a speck of the universe, every
wind of heaven strikes in Ids blood the
coldness of death—his soul floats from lh»
body like melody from the string ; day and
night, as dust on the wheel, he ia rolled
along on the heavens, through a labyrinth
of worlds, and all the creations of God aro
flaming above and beneath. Is this a crea
ture to make himself a crown of glory ; to
deny his own flesh, to mock at his fcilow,
sprung from the dust to which both will
soon return 1’

A sharp wheat buyer in Solano County,
California, seeing quotations slightly ad—
var.ced, telegraphed to Ike Bay to know if
ho should buy at quotations. The answer
came : ‘No price too high !’ On receipt
of this message he ‘pitched in' and bought
200 tons, which he was obliged recently to
sell, pocketing a loss of one dollar per ton.
A comma after ‘No,’ would have saved him
all that loss. So much for punctuation.
Five Men Duowned !—On Friday morn-»
ing lust, about Beven o’clock, the startling
n«wß came np from the river bank, and
rapidly spread through the city, that five
men bad just been drowned in the Flint

Eleven ineu—two white and nine colored
— i -employed by George Sin;lb, contractor
for tho rebuilding of Tift’s Bridge, were
engaged in filling a Crib in the centre of the
river with rock. They haJ loaded their Flat

began to dip. Alarmed —probably panic
stricken— the {eleven jumped overboard m
deep, swift, rough water. The two vvhitu
men and four negroes succeed in making
the shore. The other five and the Flat
went down. Two of the bodiesjtvcre rccov
ed, but the other three could not be found,
Mr. Smith informs us that the five men
were first-rate men, steady, faithful an 4
industrious. They have been with him four
years on lailroad and bridge work.— Al-*
