dan, and who is now angling for such an
‘enormous prize as the capital of France?*
He looks very grave.* lie is alwkys fio.”
‘But there, you see, striding through tho
crowd, is a very different looking person.
‘Yes.’ Who is that frank, smiling Major of
dragoons? He comes this way—the officer
in the white cap and yellow band, darks
blue or nearly black double*breasted frock
coat, with yellow collar, taller thau the tall
officers around him?’ That is Count Bias
marck.’
There is a stir wherever he goes—-cape
touched and hats raised lie makes straight
for a little knot of” Americans—General
Burnside in plain clothes, General HherK
dan, General Hazen and General Forsyth
in uniform, but without swords. You hear
his laugh above the murmurs of tbo crowd,
and the wave of souud in which his nanqe t
‘Bismarck,’ is borne. How heartily ho
shakes hands with them, bouyant and free,
elated as some officer might bo who bad
just won promotion on a battlefield. All
the world knows the soulless likeness out
of which even photography haß failed,
however, to take all expression; but one
must have aotuul experience of the pecu
liar vivacity, or rather penetration of hia
glance as it is emitted from under those
tremendous snaggy eyebrows to measure
tlie power of his face—the one grand, overs
whelming force of which is to my, mind,
intrepidity—an immense audacious courage
physical and mental, and a will before
which every obstacle must yield or be turn
ed. Tho people were ucver tired of look*,
irig at him, and grand dukes and princes
were of small account as long as he was to
be seen; tiic prince of liohenZollern, being,
however, an exception to the remark—*tho
fair pretext of the war;’ as a lady called
him, alluding to hill blonde complexion and
hair; and, iudecd, to use Scott’s words of
averhousc. h ? s face is such au ono ‘as
limmers love to paint, and ladien to ‘look
upon.
The Cause of the Death of General Lei.
—President Davis is reported as saying at
Alexandria that the death of General Le e
affected him deeply, says the Sentinel &
Chronicle. It was not, he said, of old age
or ordinary illness he died, but rather from
corroding reflection, which wore away the
casket oHiis great soul. Persons rid them
selves oi unhappy meditations by ming
ling freely iu the giddy whirl of society,
but Lee was a man apart from all ot&dr
men. Qe permitted no escape to tho
mountain load of saddened lay
close upon his heart. He kept his sorrows
to himself, and finally succumbed to the
oppressive burden.
The Sociee—-The Now Jersey Afecbaoio
says :
The South is going into manufasturifig;
All over the country new cotton mills are
being built and put in operation. Georgia
has heretofore nearly monopolised this
branch of industry at the South ; hat now
Mississippi and Alabama as well as the
Carolinas, are waking up to the advantage
of thi manufacture of cotton goods. At
Camden, Alabama, a wealthy company have
taken the initiatory steps to erect a largo
building, and fill it with the most approved
machinery. At Carrolton, Mississippi, a
large factory is in operation, which, in a
short time, will employ one houdred and
eighty spindles. In Marengo county, Ala
bama, they are making arrangements to
manufacture on a large scale. At Cuba
station, Sumpter couuty, a factory is also
shortly to be in operation. These are few
of the indications that the South will soon
become filled with factories. The revolt of
