The Savannah Fair.
The present indications are that Decatur
county will furnish a large delegation to
the approaching fair to take place at Sa
vannah, a proportion of which will be la
dies. The only objection r we have as yet
heard offered against attending, is the fear
entertained by some that the boarding ac.
commodations of the city will not be ample
for the tremendous crowd that is expected
to be present. r l his erroneous impression
may dot er many from attending, who oth
c*friao ir-uid be glad to go I’o all such
we say, there is no cause for non-atten
dance on that score. Savannah has capa
bilities for accommodating at the very
least, one-third more guests than any city
in the . w tate, and her general capacity is
being considerably augmented by the
transient preparations now'inprocess.
As to the great magnitude of the Expo
sition, en ertaining features of the fair,
the attractions to be seen and heard while
in the city, we have o ly to add, the Forest
City is doing her best, as will be under
stood from a perusal of the following par •
agraph from the Republican of that place:
This is to be an event in !he history of
Savannah, and we look forward to it with
more than ordinary interst- All that energy
amJ faithful pejrfotmance of duty could do
has been accomplished by the Board of
Management, who are men equal to the
great under takiog assuniod- The indica
tions are that we shall have a laige crowd
of visitors frrm every section of the Uui
ted States, who, wo feel assured, will be
entertained in Savannah in a manner becom
ing onr city. The readers '«f the Republic
can have but to read the official announce
ments from the Secretary to be properly in
humed upon all points which may effect
their interest. We learn that arrangements
are now being perfected for s'uch amuse*
rnents as will give spice to this exhibition
of our native and foreign industries*
Election for Governor. —A bill has
been passed by the Legislature ordering a
special election for Governor next month
There have been the names of a number of
prominent and good men offered for the
position, any one of whom would discharge
the duties of the office worthily. We do
not know that we have any par icular
choice in the matter, feeling assured that
the triumph of the Democracy is beyond
petadventure, and that the selection of the
party will be a wise one. If we are to
have a preference, however, it points in
the direction of Hons. John Screven, of
Savannah, or W A. Huff, of Macon, both
of whom are possess and of superior claims
as well as qualifications for the office.
United States Senator. —Thomas M.
Norwood, Esq., of Favannali, was elected
United States Senator by the Legislature,
on Tuesday. His vote in the Fenate was
27,against 2 cast in favor of C. B. Wo ten,
and in the House, he received 127 against
24.*. Maj. Bruton, of this c ty, Vuted for
Norwood.
The'L.gen'leman elected is a staunch
and true Democrat, and we think a
good and wise selection.
Federal Qfficaals.— Alv n B. Cia khas
been appointed Assessor, and A. F. W Ison
Collec or f r the First Internal Revenue
Dsitr ct of Georg a. The latter is a good
appointment and wll give satisfaction to
all parties, but we cannot say the same for
the former.
Judge Lochrane.- Chief Justice Loch
rane is desirous to res gn his position < n
the Supreme Bench, but is afraid such ac
t on, at this time, m ght be miseon

Disappearance oftheYeltow Fever
IN Pbar^iston.— The Charleston pare; s an
nounce the disappearance of yellow feve>
in ;hat Gity, and adv se absentees that they
may now return with safety. The News
says frpst was seen iu the upp r parts of
the city on >u d>y morning; The Courier,
cf the same date, says:
If there has lpeen a frost within seven
miles of the city as was currently reported,
anfigenerally cred ted yesterday, we feel
assured that it is rapidly approaching, and
if the cool spell which is upon us, at this
whiting ,(Sunday p. m., continues, and
there can be no doubt but ihat it will, we
shall be much surprised if there is not frost
in ■the city limits before morning.
The editor adds: . ’While there was dan
ger, w.o were very careful in not uttering
onp word enc uraging absentees to return
or.calculated to indu e strangers to come
her. e, but now we feel at perfect liberty to
assert that all who wish to return or visit
us-may do so with the utmost impuni'y.’
We c ng atulate the peop e of Charles

Tallahassee & Gforgia Railroad.—
We understand that the Directors of the
above Company, at a "meeeting held on
last Friday, r ceived a verbal report from
Capt. DuVal, the Engineer,] of a recon
noisance made by liim of th ; country be
tween Tallahassee and the Georgia b oun
dary. He found the route very favorable,
more so than the line of the .jroad f < om
Tallahasesee to Quincy, or from Quincy to
the Aplachicola river. It was determined
by the Directors to have the line im
mediately surved and located for the dis
tance of six or eight m les out of Talhassee,
and to commence he work of grading as
soon as labor cau beer gaged. It s un
derstood thht the narrow guage will be
adopted for the road.—Tallahassee Flor

Democratic State Committee. —On the 27th
the State Executive committee of ‘the De-»
inocracy* of Georgia assembled at Macou
and adopted the following :
Resolved, That the fruits of the victory
achieved at the December election cannot
be secured without thorough organization.
We reiterate the opinion previously ex*
pressed by this committee, that men of
character and ability slrould be nominated
for office, and it should l>6 regarded as a
patriotic duty to support and elect them,
though individual preferences have to be
abandoned.
Resolved, That the people • of Georgia,
aud this committer, have an abiding con
fidence that the Democratic Legislature,
soon to assemble wilt be guarded by ‘VVis
dom, Justice, and Moderation;’ that its
action will be discreet;its enactments just,
and its administration honest and econom
ical.
Resolved, That this committee believe
the reports of the existence of Kti-Klux or
other secret or political organizations in
this State, which have induced Congress to
take action on that subject, are wholly un
founded That there have been acts of
lawlessness and violence cannot be denied,
but they have not been instigated by any
partisan motive or feeling. The ill advis
ed use of the pardoning power, by which
notorious criminals have been relieved from
the punishment due to their crimes, has, in
some instances, excited persons to acts of
violeuce which would not have otherwise
occurred, and which we unhesitatingly con
demn and disapprove.
The Custom House Cabinet. —The cab
inet session of the Custom House, held on
Tuesday, was the preliminary caucus which
subsequently decided the fate of some of
the Goverment office-holde s. We learn
that the immaculate Robb has appo nted
the following black and streaked Radicals
to the po itions of n ght watchmen or/’in
spectors” ra the Custom Department of the
United Siates: K'ng S. Thomas, n gro,
vice A. Seers, white, who was and seharged
some mon hs since; David H. Sheari g,
negro, vice J- hn McLean, whi e discharged
some time sine ; Fleming D. Butts, negro,
vice S. Peck, white, who died some three
months ago; Cyrus L. Brown, negro, vice
James N. Sm th, white, who was dischar
ge and a few days since. The parties were
discharged because they were not black
enough at heart ’ o affiliate with Robb.
The following appo ntments were also made
by the F. 0. I: James Sims, negrof T.
Basch, wh te; Wm. Wo *d, white. These
individuals are also inspectors in the same
department as the first named.—Sav
