WAR WITH SPAIN'
The question of whether or not the tfireaU
eninff relative positions new occupied by
the United Slates and Spain will finally re*
aalt in war between tb«*e two patioae,
seems to be oie of engrossing interest in
this country. On the all important sub*
ject, Brick Pomeroy recklessly lets drive as
follows.
“Nothing is surprising a<>w»a- days; and
if it was announced by te-morrow r s tele
grams that the Uuit«d r States had declared
war against Spain, it would astonish no
body.

War made Grant President once, and
unless some ooe trips him up, a war with
Spain would help him to a second term of
office. A war with Spain would be cheap
if iu return the country could secure a
continuation of the rule of the wisest
statesman, the greatest soldier, the roost
dignified gentleman, the fondest relation,
and best Judge of tan terriers iu existence.
Spain in former days supplied the rob
bers ofthe seas with plunder. Wherever
a Spanish flag was seeu at a masthead, it
was a sure thing that South America and
Mexican doubloons by the banoi full were
in the bold; and the buccaneers had an ea
sy way of gaining a livelihood. History
in part repeating itself, after the lapse of
a couple or so of centuries, may bring
back to the buccaneer* of the modern era,
the glorious times when King Ferdinand’s
galleons wcie a sure thing to the brisk
rovers of tho sea. From many a coral
reef in the Western isles, from many a
snug harbor of the Spanish main, issued
the sailing bandit, to grasp the treasures
of the Kings of Spain. A war with that
country would revive in all its glory the
gang-plank and its tragedies, and tho fes
tal robberies that decked with glory and
with gore the black flag of the pirates of
the olden golden times.
What a host of robbers iu the shape of contract
ors would start, like box Jacks, from their dens!
What a host of hat-wakera for the army would be
felt throaghtall the arteiics of shoddy! and honest
Tom Murphy, welcoming grim-v'n-aged war,
would spread a rim around ihe World, and put a
climax, in the shape of a rotten cast or, upon ev
ery valiant sailor erfEsted for grog and prize
money in the mighry tnghoatß of our navy
Ben Butler too would no longer pine inactive in
his beloved two residences in Massachusetts, but
buck! itig on his famous New -Orleans under armor
Would wave a thousand spoons and cry like the
gentle daughters of the horseleech, ‘ More-’—
Great Sickles, he of the many crimes and frequent
escapes, would t}ap has wooden leg which nearly
lost the fight at Gettysburg; and pawn, as be did
in hippy days gone by, the silverware of his mis
tress on the sly, with which to equip a regiment
to run into a bank vault, and quicker run away
from the foe He wou'd not care whether it was
