GRANT SWOPPING HORSES-
A RECONCILIATION WITH FORNEY AND
A BREAK WITHCAMEROA*
Washington, Febrarary 18.—Colonel
Forney, Collector of the Port of FhiladeL
pbia, arrived to-day, and was visited by
the leading officers of (the [administ ration,
who bad apprehensions for some time past
that be was about to abandon the for tones
of General Grant and join himself to the
independent Republicans. Asa result of
ail the interviews on the part of these genj>
tlemen with Forney, they report him sftll
sound in the faith. This evening Forney
dined with the President, and it is under
stood pledged himself anew to stand by
the administration- In order to conciliate
Forney, and hold him to the support of
Grant, the latter will allow the ex Colleo
to name his successor, and hie appointments
in the Philadelphia Custom-house will re
main undisturbed. This new turn in affaiis
is likely to make trouble betwen Grant and
Cameron. He has been anxious to have
one of bis henchmen appointed Collector
and to have Forney driven over to the dis
satisfied and disappointed men among she
Republicans. It is stated that Grant begins
to lose faith in the venerable Senator from
Pennsylvania, and that he will hereafter
swear entirely by Forney- Os course Cam
eron will stir up trouble for Grant among
his followers in Pennsylvania, and the feel
ing begins to gain ground that in view of
all the circumstances, the Keystone State
is not as certain for Grant as it was a few
months ago,—Cor, World-

LOCAL AFFAIRS
HALF SHEET.
Owing to a failure iu our paper
•we are unable to issue but a half-sheet this week.
The paper from this date passes into new bands
and will be issued regularly hereafter. The now
proprietor will issue the Bainbridge Sun in an en
tire new dress in a short time, and otherwise make
improvements which will lender it one of the best
weeklies in the State, and in every way acceptable
to the reading public. We hope this apology may
suffice for our short comings this week, and in
future we shall endeavor to do without excuses of
any nature.
Locals are extremely scarce this week.
Boggy tiding is quite fashionable iu Bainbridge
atpn eut.
Mayor Jones had one or two sittings this week.
Several parties were reprimanded and other were
fined.
The festival came off last night, but we have
not time to give particulars this week, but will do
so iu our next.
. ! * ■' ■* ♦ 1 -I
There was a serenading party out onc'night this
week, and they made the streets, fence coiners,
&c., howl.
Personal. —We received a brief but pleasant
visit this week from Dr. Love, Agent of t »
Ivuta Constitution.
The Shoo Fly Minstrels didn’t exhibit their
sjoartness this week. We hope they will shortly,
for there’s no telling, you know, where blind
horses will stagger.
The weailier continues miserable, changing al
ternately from sunshine to rain, and from heat
to cold.
We have a communication lrom Mr. R. S. D. (
of Whighnm, but which we must decline to pub
lish, except as an advertisement, aud then to be
paid for cash in advance.
. ■ ■ ——-
Op* Aor.Nr.—Mr. T. B. Cloud, at the
is our authorized agent in the city, and all con,
tracts for subscription and advertising made with
him, will be earned out by us.
There is a young clerk in this town who
shoes of such a size that he is going to p e a
petition to our city fathers askiug pay for tiling
auts. Enterprising youth, that.
Mr. D. W. Broome, an old and well- known citi
zen of Bainbridge, died on Wednc. !ay night of
consumption.
B. F. Powell, Es-q., well-known to our entire
community, and throughout the State, having
served for a good many terms in the Lower House
of the Georgia Representatives, died yesterday
evening at 5 o’clock.
Onr Local lias lost liis pocket-book containing the
tenth part of a dollar and a number of extracts
clipped from exchanges. If the finder will return
the extracts he may keep the book and theimoney,
as we are not particular about expenses.
Retort.— We devote the most of our outside
this week, to the able report of President John
Screven, of the Gulf Bond. Bead it ou the first
page.
Our Local received a valentine, and we give the
following stanza as a very correct sample of what
the whole was:
One good square look was all we took—
It told our mutual love,
I gently inurmum- and .- “Dearest one."
Says he : “My turtle dove !”
Now ain’t that nice boy’s, Wouldn't you like
come of thai. Who would’nt be an editor ?
Zkba.—'This gentleman gave two very pleasing
entertainments in this city on Wednesday and
Thursday ejrcuings of this week. Considerable in
terest not devoid of merriment too, was caused by
the giving away of his prizes. This deponeut
drew a fiveJdoHar note, and consequently is happy
Two negro women, living on the Quincy road-,
near the four mile creek, got into a dis
pute the other day in which pocket knives,
were wade the force of argument. One of them
was very seriously cut.
XsiQHrs of Phtthub.—We are requested to an
nounce that a meeting will be held next week for
the purpose of organising a lodge of the above
named order. There have been several attempts
TpaiT* to organize a lodge in this city, bat, through
ineffectual efforts to obtain a charter, they have
all failed. The charter has been granted-by Prof.
Ryan, Grand Master, and the order will now un
doubtedly find an existence in Bainbridge.
Death’s Doings. —Mr* J. C. Blount, of Whig
ham, died on 1 burday. Mr. Henry Daniels a welb
known citizen of Bainbridge, died on the same
dav.
Dsad.—Old Bob, known in this city as “Don’t
you pee,” died the other day from taking in too
large a cargo of spoiled cove oyster*.
The following valentine was sent to ns with the
request that we publish it as an auswer to the
one in our last isaj^^^We do the hope th at
these two be brought together,
and forever so rOT»*w***S3D. Sun.
An answer to a valentine.
TO WILLIAM.
I could love most any laddie
If he proves himself a man,
If he can but name bis daddy.
And he’s not a sorry sham,
Squinting, blinking,
Loafing, drinkiog,
I despise in any man.
I will love, it is my failing,
Women loves th3 good, the gay,
But your sex are ever ailing
And forever want their way,
So astounding.
So confounding,
Or the devil is to pay.
I can love the handsome fellow.
Comely, gallant, graceful, true,
In Lis ways, mature and mellow,
Knowing, what to say and do,
Fondly viewing,
Always cooing,
Minds his business, never blue,
I do love I own it sadly
Once I pledged a faithful heart,
If my Will'amjdld act badly
I'd forgive, we could not part,
Gambling, smoking,
Vulgar joking,
Dare you call manly art,
I was loved un+o di traction,
By a num skull, fool was he,
And he had the satisfaction
To get floored, a sprawling free,
He went gliding,
Gently sliding,
In his ear a hornet bee.
I could love yon till I’m dying,
If you’l change your style and rig,
Quit your toddies, sickly sighing,
And ignore that hateful wig,
Quit your croaking,
Lager soaking,
Ugly Street and clownish jig.
