Fioirr —Tliere was quite a tussle on the court
house square on Thursday afternoon last, between
two gentlemen from the country. No blood.
Fine fresh hams are being sold at the popular
•tore of Simon A. Weil at 16 cents per pound,—
The cheapest yet.
Thk W rather.— We are having beautiful weath
er just now. Gardens in the city are in a flouf
fching condition. We had a nice little shower
the first part of the week.
Mat Pic-Nic, — The school of Messrs. Allen &
Critchell are to haveabigpic-nic in May, to which,
we learn, the Good Templars are to be invited. —
Wo wish the participants a happy time.
Chanc.e.— We note that the firm heretofore ex

body has been dissolved, the latter buying out the
interest of the former.
Thanks.— -On our return home last week, we
were presented with a fine boquet of flowers, sent
during our absence by one pf the fairest of the fair.
She will please accept our bachelor thanks for the
tame.
Tax Notic*.—The attention of our readers is
dirreted to the tax notice, to be found in another
column, of Mr. Brockett, our county tax receiver.
All interested had best take notice and govern
thcmselrM accordingly.
Firkmasio.- -From the Times, we learn that the
firemen of Valdosta are to have a big time on the
15th of May, and that the firemen of this city,
Thomasville and Quitman are to bo invited to at
tend. ,
Larck PrnciiAPK.—Messrs. T. B. Ilunewell &
To., have purchased all that property between tlie
More of Spear & Thompson, and the Hopson build
up. We suppose that the* na>ih?'*rg k gontemplate
building on the vacant lots contained ifi their pur
chase.
AnsrsT.— Our editor is again absent. Was
home this week long enough to overflow us with
ropy, and now is off again. We believe he is some
where in the vicinity of Valdosta now, though for
the life of us wc can't say where.
The Party at Mr. W. C. Sobers.— Wc are
Sony that wc could not be present tit the party at
the residence of this gentleman on Friday evening
last. We are unable to go into particulars, but
learn that it was a very pleasant affair, ar.d every
body enjoyed themselves to their different heart's
content.
On last Friday evening the StouewaU Engine
Company, under cortimand of Ist assistant J. I).
llanvil, proceeded to the residence of Mr. Jim
stt. the newly elected bridegroom, and offered
through their orator, Mr. Russell, the congratula
tions of the company. It was a pleasant and hap
py occasion.
biVF.i.T.—Times have been quite lively in Bain
bridge this week. Court has been in session the
entire week, and a great many people have been in
t®wn. V e notice that our farmer friends who
iave been caught on the jury wear exceedingly
ong facts in consequence of losing this fine weath

paid us a brief visit this Week.
" e also eujoyed a visit from ojur old friend and
tanner fellow townsman, AVm. E. Collier. Billy
to be in fine health, and is emjoyiug his

~ Crnss Arr^vnoN.—-We are requested by
li***! n ®^ lt to members of the Oak City
ItT h ii Company to assemble at their
c ouae on this evening at 8 o'clock. Those
o anticipate going to Thomasville are especially
ueat.jd to be present, as business of importance
w transivted.
The SHlhera treigtaa.
As will be seen by the prospectus in another
column, the proprietors of the Sew will commence
the publication in Thomasville about the 15th of
August or sooner, of • new paper, to be known as
the Soctbbrn Georgian. This is a project not
entirely new to Messrs. Johnston k Cos., and it is
one which we think wiH meet with entire appro
bation from the public. Thomasville is a young
city which is improving and growing with r rapid
ity, in our opinion, unequalled by any town in
South western Georgia, and the people theiy and
in the surrounding country really desire such an
addition to their interests as a good, live and pro
gressive newspaper. Thete is already a paper pub
lished in Thomasville, the Southern Enterprise,
which is in clever and able hands, but we think
the field sufficient to warrant still another, and
with this tiew of the subject the proprietors of
the Sun have been induced to embark in the en
terprise. We spent a day of last week in canvass
ing the city, and the encouragement ofFered and
inducements held out to us by the community
were gratifying, and at the same time sufficient to
convince us that should we use energy, persever
ence and enterprise, our success is placed beyond
peradventure.
It is a well known fact that there is nothing
that can or will promote the growth of a city more
than a well conducted newspaper, and this is just
what Thomasville at this time requires. She
needs a mouth piece that will present her claims
and advantages to an outside world, and by that
means not allow her importance to be known only
at home.
Politically, the Georgian will favor the doc
trines of the great Democracy, and ever be red hot
in the cause of right, honesty and pure govern
ment, and lash, with no sparing hand, corruption
and fraud wherever, whenever and in whomsoever
discovered.
The editorial department of the Georgian will
be under the control of our senior proprietor, Mr.
R. M. Johnston, who Will be assisted by a promi
nent citizen of Thomasville, one of the ablest po
litical writers in the State, and who will, in the
coming campaign, deal some telling blows in the
cause of right.
Mr. J’s assuming control of the Georgian will
not at all interfere with the publication of the Sun,
as the editorial force of the latter will be increased,
and both papers be under the control of Mr. John
ston ; in fact, we intend to make the Sun a better
paper than ever..
With this explanation to our home friends —
one we deemed proper—we would urge upon our
patrons, that aie to be, in Thomasville, to hurry up
their cakes and call on either Mr. E. Milner
Am
Smith, at the banking house of Messrs. Wright &
Stegall, or H. W. Hopkins, Esq., and subscribe for
the- Georgian, and enable us to give theta a good
paper. 1 Our terms are moderate, and the Geor
gian will be within the reach of every one. And
we expect to obtain some subscribers in Decatur
county for the Georgian, for while nearly every
man in the county takes the Sun, we think it
would not operate against their interests to also
become subscribers to the Georgian. . ;,j
Dancing Schooi,. —Prof. -Allan Y, Robinson &
Son contemplate visiting our city at nn early day
for the purpose of getting up a dancing school.—
Both the Professor and his accomplished son
Willie, arc well known to. nearly all our citizens as
perfect gentlemen and complete masters of the art'
they profess to teach, and any who may entrust
them with the education of their children in the
polite art, can rest assured that perfect satisfaction
will be given It is, however, conditional whether
or not they visit us. If a number of scholars suf
ficient to warrant their coming can be obtained,
they will shortly open here. If, on the contrary,
a school of sufficient size cannot be assembled; they
must necessarily give over their intention of com
ing.
Lists for the recording of the nahics Os all those
who wish to attend are now open at this office,
and we will cheerfully take the names of any-who
may want to join a class. Now young folks bestir
yourselves, and let us have some of the Professor's
pleasant soirees. His charges are moderate, and
we would advise all those parents who would see
their children exercise the proper gracefulness of
actions and manners to successfully entitle them to
high places in society, to at once enlist them in a
first-class dancing academy.
The Prof, is too well known here and through
out Georgia to require any recommendation at our
bauds, mid we will simply add, come and give us
your names, and engage to learn to dance.
To Thomapvllle.
We have been informed that the Oak City Fire
Company will leave on tO-morrow night for Thom
asville, to pay their visit to the .Rescue Hook and
Ladder Company of that city. We are further
informed that about thirty of the boys will attend.
More than that number would avail themselves of
the pleasures of the visit, but fob the fact that
many are kept at home by business engagements.
You must do • your best and look your prettiest
over there boys, for you are to be the guests of a
trim looking set of good fellows, and you are also
going to (me of the most hospitable towns in Geor
gia.
We see that the delegation which went to Sa
vannah to meet the new Truck of the Rescue, were
received by the Mechanics of the Forest City in
fine style, and perhaps the Oak Cities may meet
some of their* old friends of the Mechanics on their
visit* v - -f
Our Tht^iana
ITie Bainbridge Amateur Corps, under the man
agement of Mr. L. Oscar Jackson, will soon com
mence tlie rehearsal of their new piece “ School for
Scandal.” The piece is an old English Comedy
in five acts, and is generally conceded to stand at
the head of the English comic drama, and if the
Thespians succeed—as we have no doubt they will
* —in placing it on the stage to advantage, our citi
zens may anticipate quite a treat in its production.
Tlie cast has been made and embraces the very
best dramatic talent of the city. Among the male
characters we may mention Jim F. Tan Horn, L.
O. Jackson, O. G<- Gurley, Manny Engel, D. A.
Russell, and others equally as good as those men
tioned. The female cast has also been made, but
we are not at liberty just now to reveal it.
We think our citizens may expect «omething
good when the performance take place.
New Paper.—-We learn from a prospectus pub
lished in the Democrat in this city, that Messrs
S. T. Morton & V. B. Baughn are soon to start
anew paper in Colquitt, Miller county, to be
known as the “ Miller County Star.” We wish
; if-much success. - -

pleasant social gathering at the residence of this
accomplished lady on Tuesday evening last. We

Those who attended had a strictly pleasant time,
and until a late hour the enjoyment was kept up.
