A NEW POEM.
The following very original poem we find in an
exchange. A number of the lines may appear fa
miliar to the reader.‘but we have every reason to
lieiieve the production is entirely original:
By the lake where drooped the willow,
Bow, boatmen, row;
I want to be an angel,
And jump Jim Crow.
-‘•n old crow sa* on a hickory limb,
'.’one him but to praise ;
Let me kiss him for his mother,
For be smells of Switzer kase.
The minstrels to the war has gone,
With his banjo on his knee ;
He awoke to hear the sentries shriek,
There’s a light in the window for thee.
A frog he would a-wooing go,
His hair was curled to kill;
He used to wear an old grey coat,
And the sword of Banker HilL
Oft in the stillv night,
Make way for liberty he cried;
I won t go home till morning.
With Maggie by my side.
I am dying. Egypt, dying,
Susannah don t you cry;
Know how sublime a thing it is;
To brush away the blue-tail fly.
The boy stood on the burning deck.
With his baggage checked for Troy;
One of the few immortal names,
llis name was Pat Malloy.
Maty had a little lamb,
He could a tale-unfold;
He had no teeth to eat hoe-cake.
And his spectacles were gold.
„ —jg
Lay on, lay on Mcduff, ‘
Man wants but little here below.
And 1 am to be the Queenjof May,
So kiss me quick and go. J|
