HowMuqfe?
Yes, how much does it cost to be Opeommoda
ting ? We think some of the clerks around town
would do well to consider this question.
The above remarks of ours are prompted by
a little scene we witnessed some days ago at one
of own leading stores. A young girl, to us a
strapger, came into the store, ostensibly fat the
purpose of making some purchases. She was not
dressed in the extreme of fashion, bat plainly, and
while she had no Dolly Vardens or half bushel
waterfalls on. her neat and tasty apjvearance at
tested the fact i hst she had seen better days.—
Perhaps the fortunes of war had reduced her
from affluence to poverty—maybe her father,
bft>th *r or the One Upon whom shc leaned for sup
port, had surrendered his life defending a country
which ha* produced for the child of that martyr
an iusultqr. The clerk of the establishment upon
her entrance turned and demanded in a tone, not
at all gentlemanly, “ what do .you want girl?”—
When it is known that it was a young lady of near
.sixteen yeAra of age to whom-rihis insulting lan
guage was addressed, the conduct of this rapscal
iffcn wiff lfcjfurther condemned.
We have withheld names and locality, bul
we think it has come fo.a nice pass ygung
tody, simply because she is not adOfned hjr All the

Last Tuesday night Miss Parsons, the teacher of
the Whittiercolored school, in this place, had an
exhibition of her pupils. The exercises consisted
both teacher and pupils, especially the songs.
At tltte cfoee df the performance. Mayor H. 8.
Jones, Got W. O. Fleming and D. A; Russell, by
request of the teacher, addressed she large crowd
of colored people, assembled to witness the exhibi

Miss Parsons, is regarded here iiy those who
know her, a* A kind Christian lady, performing hei

in whisky, and on Friday morning early he awoke,
got tip and wehl to the wagon talking and seemed
to be usually well, and on arriving at or near the
wagon he suddenly and at once fell to the ground
dead, he never spoke after falling. The cause of
