the nominating committee was packed and
favoritism largely indulged in. As to
whether this last imputation is true or not,
we do not feel authorised to nor do we
venture an opinion.—lt may l>e a mistaken
idea. Nevertheless the district system lias
an effect which, to say, the least, is un
desirable and wo shall use every ef
fort in our power to convince the citizens
of Decatur coflntv of the truth of what wo
say, and to induce them to abandon the
system which has already in the past and
wdriii the future be productive of disas
trous results. • .
Let us have a full convention of the en
tire people of the county, and let the nom
inees be chosen by ballot, and then we are
sure to have candidates in the field that are
the choice of the people, and hence, men

We have already heart! a good deal said
on the subject, and from all we can judge
the District systepv will meet with but little
favor from a’large majority of the voters of
the county. We shall haye more to say
on this subject in the future.

SAVANNAH.
Wo paid a visit to this metropolis of
Georgia last week, and we don’t think we
ever sow the city duller at this ’season of
the year. The most of the citizens who have
not already departed are preparing to leave
for the sumaofer. Theaaerchants are some
ol them doing very well considering the
depressed times, but it is only tliose who
have their regular yearly customers that do
much. * . . r ...
We have not time, to recount all our “ups”
and “downs” during our short stay in the
city—in fact we don't feel disposed to com
mit our campaign entire to paper anyhow.
No one will be surprised at us for feeing
this way when they learn that we fell into
the company of Redheadedharris, Frank
babcock, the Marshall House boy, Billash
and some other land pirates.
We had the pleasure of meeting CoL J.

as good papers as were ever mailed to a

The True Difference.
The Montgomery county Democracy in
Kentucky declared the other day for Gree
ley as against Grant. They say in their
resolutions that they prefer “Greeley and
Brown with honesty, universal amnesty,
supremacy of the civil authorities, and the
salvation of Democratic Republican insti
tutions, to Grant, corruption, disfranchise
ment of the South, military despotism and
centralism.”
Tiiis pithily explains the difference be
tween Grant and Greeley as they now
stand. Between the two give us Greeley
all the time. Give us a Democrat before
either if possible, but that impracticable,
then Greeley is as much preferable to Grant
as a genuine Simonpure noble old Demo
crat to Greeley;.
T BULLY.
We copy the following little game of
sparring between the Atlanta Constitution
and Savannah News. It is a good thing.
Avery hit it right that time,-sure pop. Old
man W. TANARUS., as. usual goes for everybody
■ that differs with him and Mr. Alex, and
as is generally the case gets gloriously
“ wound up ” on all occasions. Hit him
again, Avery, he’s able to bear it, having
done got use to being “chawed.”
With us the first desire is to'secure a straight
Democratic victory- That impracticable, we are
willing to support Gtbeley as against Grant. if
Greeley can be elected. It is impossible now to
fell what is the proper course. We are not pre
pared, with the lights before us, to make a decis
ion. We waut more- information, Whan we get
that we shall speak emphatically.—Atlanta Con
stitution,
The dilemma in which our Atlanta cotcmpora
ry finds himself seems to be very common just at
this time among speculative politicians and presses.
They seem to be very much befogged. A maxim
among whist‘players is, “ When yon don’t know
what to lead, play trumps.” So in politics—when
job don’t know what else to do. stick to yodr prin
ciples. Democrat principles are the trump* that
are sure to win.—Savannah' News-
Stick to your principles always

whether yon would stand before you knew what
