"Even with a community-based

doing business in four southwest

"Products also were greatly re

growing as we have been doing
in recent years,” Bettis continued.
“Also, perhaps most impor

State Labor Commissioner
Michael Thurmond said that
the maximum weekly payment
to jobless workers who file
first-time claims for unemploy
ment insurance will increase by
$10 from $274 to $284 on July
1.
"The unemployment insurance
benefit is intended to provide a
financial bridge between jobs
for workers who lose their jobs
through of no fault of their
own." said Thurmond.
"This increase comes while
we're seeing escalating numbers
of initial claims for unemploy
ment insurance as thousands of
Georgians are being laid off
because of the slow economy."
The $10 increase is the
equivalent of a 3.6 percent raise
in the maximum benefit. The
weekly maximum amount will
now replace about 44 percent of
the average wage in Georgia.
"The increased benefit will
help unemployed workers pay
their bills until they find a new
job in our state” said Thurmond,
“helping to keep Georgia's
workforce in place until the
economy regains momentum.”
The increase applies only to
those who file claims for
unemployment insurance on or
after July 1. To be eligible,
recipients must have lost their
jobs through no fault of their
own and must be actively
seeking employment.
Under the Georgia Workforce
Reinvestment Act of 1999. the
maximum unemployment
insurance benefit has increased
gradually from $244 to $284
over the past three years.

$6.8 Million Approved For River Navigation
U.S. Representative Sanford
Bishop says House passage of
the Energy and Water Appro
priations Bill Thursday (June
28)— including $6.8 million to
continue full U.S. Corps of
Engineers' dredging of the Flint
and Chattahoochee rivers-
represents a big step forward in
efforts to preserve commercial
barge traffic in southwest
Georgia while addressing
environmental concerns.
This represents a $5.6 million
increase over the amount
recommended by President
Bush for maintaining navigation
on the Apalachicola-
Chattahoochee-Flint rivers
system, the Second District
Congressman pointed out.
Speaking on the House floor,
Representative Bishop told his
colleagues that past dredging
has been “environmentally
messy," causing "anguish"
along parts of the river system,
especially in the Florida
panhandle. However, he added,
better management of the
upstream dredging can alleviate
environmental concerns. He
said the Corps' full dredging
should be continued to preserve
the economic benefits.
"Commercial barging on the
Apalachicola, Chattahoochee,
and Flint rivers is an important
issue for our region's economic
infrastructure, and I am pleased
to see the increased level of
funding approved by the House
Appropriations Committee." he
said. He pointed out that the
ports of Bainbridge and
Columbus support 548 jobs and
more than $15 million in wages,
and generate revenue totaling
more than $40 million, adding
that "these rivers must remain
navigable if we are to continue
to see these economic rewards."
The House Appropriations
Committee called for increased
funding levels for several
navigational projects, including
the Georgia river system, in the
$28.7 billion Energy and Water
Appopriations Bill it reported
out for consideration by the full
House. All of the committee
recommendations on dredging
were accepted without opposi
tion. The measure is now before
the Senate following passage in
the House.

Husband Stands Strong
I am told, I don't need the
world to know how you feel
about me; I need for you to
show me. But, I really want the
world to know how God has
truly blessed me. For the fifth
time since we wed in September
of '97, I've had 5 major surger
ies. The first surgery was only 5
days after we wed. I can recall
the 2nd only beings months
after the first. Then we were
faced with 1 each year. I think
with the most recent one being
the hardest of them all.
Hard for me, but easy for you.
It's hard for me because, I am
upset with the fact that you've
had to go through this so many
times. You constantly remind
me this is what husbands are
supposed to do. I have a hard
time dealing with my situation,
because when we met; I was so
full of life so full of energy and
ready to conquer almost
anything. I had a sizeable salary
that matched yours, and we
could've made most of our
dreams come through. But the
surgeries changed everything.
Now, I have limitations, which
have changed me for the rest of
my life. I make a fourth of the
money I used to make when I
met you and most of the time
it's hard for me to endure
activities for any duration of
time. To me it's as if you
married me being one way; but
shortly thereafter you ended up
with a different woman. What
amazes me the most; is that you
never complain. You never even
mumble a harsh word about my
circumstances, You just keep
telling me, baby it's okay and
you keep insisting that my only
concern should be with my
healing process. Each operation
you've been through it all.
Taking time out to make sure
the nurses treat me right and
making sure if I need any
assistance you'll be the one I
can lean on. You make me face
the difficulties and the serious
ness of my condition, but you
won't allow me to have a pity
party for myself. There’s always
an encouraging word from you.
You rationalize the fact that my
wife is sick and at all costs; I
AM GOING TO BE THERE
FOR HER.
Willie, you've been there in
every imaginable way that you
could be. I know without a
shadow of doubt that when we
took our marriage vows you
meant them. When people get

ALL ARE WELCOME
(Equal Opportunity Daycare Provider)
married the vows are easy to
say when you are all dressed up
and there is a crowd around.
But, how many of us are ready
to go through the sickness or
whatever God brings our way as
husband and wife? Willie, I
know with your actions your
vows were not just merely
rehearsed for the crowd to hear.
They were from your heart and
for me. So, I want to thank you
for being my husband in every
sense of the word-especially
when it comes to all those
mountains of surgeries we had
to face. So. you're probably
going to tell me again, Cat this
isn't about people knowing what
I do for you; but about you
being my wife and showing me
you appreciate me. But, when
God gives you such a wonderful
blessing you can't keep quite
about it. I hope that whatever
comes our way as husband and
wife that I am able to stand as
strong as you have.
With all my love
