Georgia Forestry Commission Report
Burning Permits are
Required In Georgia
The Georgia Forestry Commis
sion wants to remind those who
do outdoor burning that the
“Clean Air Act” regulations set by
the Environmental Protection Di
vision allow for burning of only
“natural” materials. These in
clude leaves, limbs, pinestraw,
and brush from land clearing. Per
mits should be obtained from the
Georgia Forestry Commission
(GFC) for the burning of these
“natural” materials as well as
acreage of open and wooded land.
The GFC still gets numerous
calls for burning of such things
as household garbage, cardboard
boxes, newspaper, paneling, fur
niture. carpet, and building ma
terials. Some calls are received
about roofing felt and shingles,
items such as copper wire, tires,
and plastics or petroleum prod
ucts. These and similar items can
not be burned, they must be taken
to an appropriate dump site or
landfill.
Another problem associated
with outdoor burning is smoke.
You are responsible for your
smoke and where it goes. Using
weather information obtained
from the GFC, when you obtain
your burning permit, will assist
you in making a quick evaluation
of where and/or who will be af
fected by your smoke. Also, all
burning must be completed and
out by sunset.
By working together, we can
continue to use fire as a useful
Tom Lambert
tool to dispose of common yard
debris and in the management of
farm and timberland. For further
information on burning; burning
permits or assistance with burn
ing, contact the Lee County Unit
of the Georgia Forestry Commis
sion at 229-759-3011.

ALBANY NEEDS

MANAGEMENT
When four Albany commission

five percent raises they showed
how inconsiderate they are for
those who put their lives on the line

Any city that does not have a
long range plan in place to provide
decent raises for its employees
should take a serious look at how
much money is wasted on hiring
consultants to do what the Albany
city commissioners should be able
to do, if not vote them out of of

could perform what high salaried

the Internet and attempts to put
us in touch with our heart's de

the search engines to deliver the
five sites you want and not the
20,000 sites you don't. Here are
some tips to streamline your next
search. These tips and tricks will
help you get the news and infor

Start smart and be specific. If
you know precisely what you're
looking for, you'll save time by
being as specific as possible when
you type in your search terms. For
example: At NorthernLight
(www.northernlight.com), we
conducted separate searches and
received the following results:
"bear," 4,620,374 hits; "grizzly
bear," 96,091 hits; "grizzly bear
California," 16,752 hits; "grizzly
bear California attacks," 4164
hits. We could tweak the results
ad infinitum depending on our
need to pinpoint a topic. It doesn't
take a rocket scientist to figure
out which results list is easier to
manage. Depending on what you
need, you might find what you
are looking for at the top of a
large list of results. It might be
the only "hit" you get. It depends
on what you are looking for and
how you are looking.

"SUBLIME"
Some times the degree of Mas
ter Mason is referred to as the
Sublime degree of Master Ma
son. That the degree is sublime,
is all the highest meaning of that
abused word, is not a matter for
discussion or proof, it is sublime
if we feel it as sublime, it is just
an ordinary ceremony, if that is
all it is to us . Sublimity is not
the thing, but in us. The most
beautiful sunset which ever
thrilled the sense of color could
not be sublime to a blind man.
nor can the harmonies of
Beethoven or Wagner be sublime
to a man born deaf. If the Master
Mason degree is sublime, it is
because of what it is and what it

There are literally thousands of
others with more specialized ar
eas of expertise.
If you're in brainstorming mode
and don't really know what it is
you are looking for, you still have
options. Check out Search En
gine Guide
(www.searchengineguide.com),
is a great source for category-spe
cific search engines and directo
ries. Here, we found 18 separate
zoology directories, including
one devoted to birds. In no time,
we were soaring through a vari
ety of pertinent Internet destina
tions.
Using precise search language
doesn't always guarantee you will
get a manageable number of re
turns. The tips below can assist
you in getting better results from
your searches.
• Put a minus (-) sign in front
of any word to ensure that this
word doesn't appear in any of the
results. For instance, if you're do
ing a school report on Grizzly at
tacks, but don't want references
to the "B" movie named Grizzly
Attack, type Grizzly Attacks -
movie.
• Use a plus (+) sign in front of
any word that you do want to ap
pear in the results. For sites about
Grizzly attacks in California (and
not those of other states), type:
Grizzly +attacks +California.
• Add quotation marks to your
search phrase to guarantees that
the words appear in the precise
order indicated. If you type
"Grizzly attacks in California,"
the search engine will return sites
that use that phrase in sequence.
• Too many returns? Try the
same search with the letter t and
a colon in front of the search
terms. This will restrict your
search to words that appear in the
document title. A search for
t: Grizzly attacks will point you
to pages devoted to Grizzly at
tacks as opposed to sites that
make a passing reference to it.
• To find sites that include cer
tain words in the web address,
simply type URL: before the
search terms. Our search for
URL: Grizzly Bear returned a
manageable number of results.
• A wild-card search can deliver
variations on a word using an as
terisk to replace a character or
multiple characters. For example,
if you want to find medicine and
medical, type medic* in the
search field and you'll get replies
does to a man's heart.
The Master's degree as a whole
is a symbol of old age. of wis
dom, of experience. It is a sym
bol of preparation for that other
life which it so grandly promises.
It being s to the initiate the sym
bolism of the Sprig of Acacia, and
tells him in one breath that a man
must stand alone, even while he
must lean upon the Everlasting
Arms. It lays before him the
whole drama of man’s longing for
a Something Beyond, it tells the
tale of what ignorance and brute
strength may to destroy knowl
edge and virtue, even while it
shows that never can darkness
overcome light, never can evil
win over what is good, never can
error prevail over truth There are
many interpretations of the whole
degree. In the Sublime Degree
there is no compromise. Those
for both.
• To find sites that have a cer
tain domain extension (.edu,
.com, .net, .gov, .mil) try typing
domainxom tor one of the other
extensions) and follow it with the
topic you want, such as
domainxom grizzly + bear.
• Looking for an image rather
than text? You can either type
image: before your search key
words. You could also visit
Ditto.com, or other micro-search
engines that seek out only images.
Some of the more popular search
engines will allow you to specify
searches with the criteria of only
images, or multimedia to be re
turned in the results.
All in all most of the Internet
hype is true. You can find infor
mation about most anything you
want to. The trick is to not waste
a lot of time in doing so. Often
the obstacle is all the cool stuff
you find along the way to what
you need. As a true info-packrat,
I tend to get sidetracked with all
there is to see and do "out there".
Hopefully, these tips, and a little
practice will yield the results you
desire. Search engines are not the
end all and be all. You will likely
run across some of the many con
tent providers who make a living
selling you the information you
want and need. Lexis-Nexis, and
Westlaw are examples of sub
scription services, which provide
specialized content for specific
purposes. Many of the specialized
Magazines and News Services
can provide "pay per view" con
tent as well. While not an inex
pensive proposition, access to
these mega resources can come in
handy at term paper time, and
most will let you pay only for the
content you need. Now go for the
and remember..."Seek and ye
shall find".

A lot of threecornered alfalfa
hopper damage is being seen this
year, according to Dr. John
Baldwin, University of Georgia
Extension peanut specialist.
This pest girdles the stems of
peanut plants. These stems can
die. The threecornered alfalfa
hopper (3CAH for short) also
damages soybeans. The damage
to soybeans is worse because the
soybean only has one stem.
When that stem is girdled, that's
it for that plant. A gird led stem
will have a calloused ring around
the stem. Adventitious roots will
often emerge from around this
ring. This is the stem’s way of
trying to stay alive by sprouting
new roots above the place where
My grandparents live in

our family usually makes the 10-

used to. It is becoming increas

it was girdled.
Even more serious than girdled
stems are girdled pegs and pod
stems. This results in the destruc
tion of part of the crop.
There are no official thresholds
for treatment of this pest. Baldwin
recommends an insecticide treat
ment when, upon pulling up and
examining plants, twenty-five
percent of plants have at least one
stem girdled. Treatment may also
be warranted if high numbers of

have wondered if we will ever
have the opportunity to make a
lasting mark on the history of our

We are in the midst of a long
period of peace and prosperity,
and the world is moving towards
democracy. Our generation has
the opportunity to win wars at

epidemic of AIDS, find cures for
cancer and diabetes, while main

prosperity. Some of these things
can be as debilitating as the at
tack at Pearl Harbor. Europe en

Revolution when war was not at

and focus on the challenges
ahead. It is time we navigate our
own battleships of science and
culture into the battlefield.
