Unemployment Rate
Declines In Metro Albany
The Georgia Department of
Labor announced that the unem
ployment rate in metro Albany
declined one-tenth percent in
August to 5.1 percent, down
slightly from 5.2 percent in July.
The area’s jobless rate was 6.6
percent in August of 2000.
The decline in the rate was due
largely to the return of about
1.000 temporary workers to non
work activities, including high
school and college. At the same
time, some workers in construc
tion, retail trade, and business ser
vices, who were temporarily off
their jobs in July, returned to work
in August.
Meanwhile, the state's unem
ployment rate declined two tenths
of a percent in August to 3.8 per
cent, the same as in August of
2000. The decrease primarily re
sulted from the return of approxi
mately 60,000 temporary work
ers to non-work activities, includ
ing high school and college.
"While we're glad to see a slight
drop in the unemployment rate,
the fact is labor market statistics
for August are no longer relevant.
The terrorists attacks on Septem
ber 11 significantly altered the
employment outlook nationally
and here in Georgia,” said State
Labor Commissioner Michael
Thunnond. “ Although the airline
and hospitality industries are ex
pected to be among the hardest hit.
many others are likely to suffer
job losses as well.
“The Georgia Department of
Labor is redoubling its efforts to
assist workers affected by this cri
sis by processing their unemploy
ment insurance claims helping
them get back to work as soon as
possible,” the commissioner con
tinued.
Labor market data, job open
ings, and career development in
formation are now available on
the Georgia Department of
Labor’s Web site at
