South Georgia Jakes Day
To Be Held At Paradise

The Georgia Chapter of the Na
tional Wild Turkey Federation
(NWTF) and the Georgia Depart
ment of Natural Resources, Wild
life Resources Division (WRD)
will host the first annual South
Georgia JAKES Day on Saturday,
October 13, 2001 at the Paradise
Public Fishing Area (PFA) near
Tifton, Georgia. This fun-filled
event is free to all children 17
years of age and younger. Regis
tration begins at 9 a.m. and events
will run from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Youth participants attending the
event will receive a free member
ship to the NWTF and a free lunch
(hamburgers and hot dogs). The
first 250 participants to register
also will receive a free t-shirt. A
host of exciting activities are
planned which include: fishing,
archery shooting, pellet rifle
shooting and virtual big game
hunting with a laser shot simula
tor. There will be a live snake
show, a birds of prey show and
WRD personnel will demonstrate
a canon net used to capture wild
turkeys. Youth can register for
door prize drawings. Prizes in
clude a youth model gun.
The NWTF, headquartered in
Edgefield, SC is a national non
profit conservation and education
organization dedicated to con
serving wild turkeys and preserv
ing hunting traditions. Thanks to
the efforts of private landowners.

ing with WRD, the wild turkey
population in Georgia is thriving
and estimated to be approximately
300,000 birds when as recently as
1973, they numbered only 17,000.
In Georgia, over 61 chapters of the
NWTF boast more than 14,900
members and have generated more
than $1.3 million spent on projects
within the state since 1987.
One of the most exciting pro
grams at the NWTF focuses on
young people. JAKES, Juniors
Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and
Sportsmanship, is dedicated to in
forming, educating and involving
North America's youth in wildlife
conservation and the wise steward
ship of our natural resources. With
the growing number of turkey
hunters, the JAKES program also
is designed to help pass on the tra
ditions of hunting with a strong eye
toward ethics and safety.

The week has been a tough one
on the p’ole fishermen on the
lake, one feller sed Saturday that
if a fish had been caught that day
it’d be “wind burnt”. The wind
blew so hard some areas of the
lake was covered by 4&5 foot
waves.
The Guys & Dolls Tournament
was a great success. The cold
weather and blue bird days kept
the weights from being so great
but the thrill was still there as it
has been from 1981 when we
started with them.

unteers! Over 100 cleanups are
scheduled for "Rivers Alive,"
Georgia's Tenth Annual River
Cleanup campaign. These clean
ups will occur statewide through
out the month of October. Volun
teers are needed to participate in
these cleanups to help preserve
the state's 70,150 miles of rivers
and streams. The mission of "Riv
ers Alive" is to create awareness
of and involvement in the preser
vation of Georgia's water re
sources. The Georgia Department
of Natural Resources (DNR) en
courages sportsmen's clubs, civic
groups, church groups, scout
troops, businesses and interested
citizens to volunteer for a cleanup
in their area. To find a river

"The Rivers Alive Cleanup is
one of the most important events
in this state," said Harold Reheis,
Director of DNR Environmental
Protection Division. "Not only do
we remove thousands of pounds
of debris from the rivers, but we

also good to see Brooks Cockran,
grandson of Jim Cockran, who
was 10 on that day, they took 9th
place and a check home.
At this writing the water temp
is 77°, the lake is basic clear.
Small bass will bite but the big
ones are slow. Bream, shell-
cracker, and catfish are bitting
together deep. The speck are get
ting better everyday.

bers are expected to increase.
