Department of Labor’s Community Work Adjustment Program
The Lee County Ledger, Thursday, October 18, 2001 - Page 3B

By Julie Barnett
Mark Hester spoke to
LeeFOCUS this month about the
Department of Labor’s Division
of Rehabilitation Services. Octo
ber is National Disabilities
Awareness Month, making this a
great time to talk about the Com
munity Work Adjustment Pro
gram. Mr. Hester administers this
program in Lee, Terrell, Worth,
and Calhoun counties.
Mr. Hester provided informa
tion about how there are many
people with disabilities that are
capable of serving as excellent
employees in various fields. Of
ten, these people need to acquire
a bit of work experience in order
to be hired on a permanent basis.
The Community Work Adjust
ment Program works much like
Chip 'n Chat A Success
At the first monthly Chip ‘n
Chat held at St. Stephen's Epis
copal Church, a young lady stood
off to the side and observed 50
kids dancing, munching chips and
dip, guzzling soda, playing hide
‘n seek, chatting and laughing.
There were black kids, white
kids, preppies, freaks, and some
for whom there is no category!
They were all having a blast. She
walked up to Nancy Banker, and
asked, “why are you doing this?
What’s the reason for this party?”
“Because God loves you and
wants you to have a good time,
in a safe and comfortable place -
and so do we,” came the reply.
That’s it in a nutshell. Nancy
and Joe Dan Banker are the adult
Coordinators for the Youth Min
istry at St. Stephen’s. Ever since
they moved here, they’ve heard
“the kids need a place to hang
out.” Well, now they’ve got it.
St. Stephen’s is a homey church,
actually it IS a home, and the con
its wonderful facilities with the
youth of our community. To that
end, every 3rd Friday of each
month, middle and high school
aged youth are invited to come
out to party with each other at the
Chip ‘n Chat.
Located at 298 Leslie Hwy,
195N, in Leesburg, St. Stephen’s
is a growing fellowship with a
heart for children and youth. As
Pastor Ron Davidson points out,
Jesus preached to and taught the
adults and blessed and played
with the young. And although
there is ample opportunity for
preaching and teaching during
10:00 a.m. Sunday School, 11:00
a.m. Worship Service and a
Wednesday night Healing service
at 6:00 p.m., the Chip ‘n Chat is
strictly for play. The next Chip
‘n Chat will be held on Friday,
October 19, from 6:30 p.m. until
8:30 p.m. If you have any ques
tions or would like more informa
tion, please feel free to contact
an internship program. People
with disabilities who are ready to
enter the workforce are matched
with employers who agree to pro
vide about 3 months of on the job
training at minimum wage salary.
Students can work 15 hours a
week, non-students can work 20
- 40 hours each week. The wages
paid by the employer are reim
bursed through federal funding.
Employers are also given tax
credits for participating in the
program.
Before being entered into this
program, the interns have carried
out a work preparation plan. Each
plan is specific to the individual,
and it may include developing
skills in time management, self
presentation, and computers, and
interpersonal communication.
If the work site needs to have
modifications in order to meet the
needs of the intern, then DOL’s
Division of Rehabilitative Ser
vices will help the employer to
identify options and specifica
tions. For example, if an intern
needs to have a handicapped ac
cessible ramp leading to the en
trance of the building, the Divi
sion of Rehabilitative Services
helps the employer to determine
appropriate location, materials,
and measurements. Some interns
may need special computer ac
cessories or equipment, and the
Division of Rehabilitative Ser
vices will help with getting nec
essary personal equipment for in
dividuals in the program.
Internships in a variety of areas
are needed. While many of the
interns may have mild mental
handicaps, others may have
physical challenges such as cere
bral palsy, visual and hearing
deficits, or ADHD. The level of
education and experience among
the interns varies as well. Educa
tion ranges vary widely- some
interns have not completed high
school, while others have
achievied advanced college de
grees. According to Mr. Hester,
there are Lee County members
who are preparing to enter the
workforce through this program.
Mr. Hester is working to match
interested employers with interns
that fit their needs. If you are an
employer who might be inter
ested in providing an internship,
please contact Mark Hester at
430-4170.

in using some examples of Mr.
Boedeker’s work on display
there. The agent asked Mrs. Bear
to contact Boedeker about pur
chasing the rights for the draw

in the upcoming book. Later, a fi
nancial agreement was reached.
The book was released this
month and is being distributed to
vendors all over the country. The

to the media center at the middle
school.
