What the Bible Teaches
By Frank Taylor
Our Lord left but two ordi
nances to be observed by His
disciples: Baptism and the
Lord’s Supper. The test of
scriptural validity of a Christian
ordinance consists of an
affirmative answer to three
questions asked concerning it.
First, was it commanded by the
Lord Jesus, as recorded in the
four Gospels? Second, was it
practiced in the early Church, as
described in Acts of the
Apostles? Third, is it spiritual
significance clearly expounded
in the Epistles? Only two
ordinances meet this three fold
requirement: Baptism and the
Lord’s Supper.
The New Testament reveals
that baptism, which is observed
but once, is by immersion in
water, and is only intended for
those who have professed faith
in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is the
God-given figure, or illustra
tion, of each Christian’s
identification with Christ in His
death, burial and resurrection.
The believer’s obedience to this
ordinance constitutes his public
confession of this fact to others.
By submitting to baptism he
announces, as it were, to those
who witness it: “I hereby
confess, in this my baptism, my
personal faith in the Person and
the substitutionary work of my
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I
believe that He died for my
sins, was buried and rose again
for my justification. By my act
of obedience to His command, I
now show forth, in this picture,
my identification with the Lord
Jesus is His death, burial and
resurrection. (Matthew 28:19-
20: Acts 8:26-39; Romans 6:3-
6.)
The New Testament also
reveals that the Lord’s Supper,
which is to be observed
frequently, is for those who
have been saved by the grace of
God. This ordinance consists of
believers meeting together, in
the name of the Lord Jesus, and
breaking and partaking of a loaf
of bread, picture of the body of
Christ,
and
drinking
of a cup
contain
ing the
fruit of
the vine,
symbol
of the
precious
blood of Christ, by which their
eternal redemption has been
secured. Thus the Lord’s
Supper is a simple memorial
ordinance, which was given by
the Savior on the night of His
betrayal. It exists only for the
purpose of enabling His
disciples to gratefully remem
ber Him as they take the bread
and drink the wine, and thus
show forth His death until He
returns for them. (Matthew
26:26-29; Mark 14:22-26; Acts
20:7; 1 Corinthians 11:23-34)
While Scripture does not give
us any plain and definite
command as to how often the
Lord’s Supper should be
observed, we can gather from
the example of the early church
that it was their custom to meet
each Lord’s Day for this
purpose. Acts 2:46 indicates
that the observance was
practiced each day in the homes
of individual Christians; but
that, later on, it became a
weekly observance as indicated
in Acts 20:7. It is mentioned as
being the common practice of
that day. The same expression
is found in 1 Corinthians 16:2:
“Upon the first day of the
week,” indicating it was the
custom of the believers at
Corinth to come together each
Lord’s day to remember the
Lord. It does not say: “On the
first Lord’s day of the month,”
or “the first Lord’s day of the
quarter.” Those who object to
the weekly observance of the
Lord’s Supper certainly have no
objection to taking a collection
each first day of the week! If it
is true of the one, it is also true
of the other.

Homecoming
Sunday, October 21, 2001
East Albany Church of God will
celebrate Homecoming on
Sunday, November 4, 2001. Our
guest speaker will be Brother
Varney Aspinwall, who pastored
here for nearly eight years prior
to leaving in 1999. Brother
Aspinwall is well-known in the
Albany area, and many people
will want to come home to hear
his anointed ministry.
Sunday School will begin at
the regular hour of 10:00 a.m.
followed by the morning
worship service beginning at
11:00 a.m.. After having
fellowship and lunch in the
Social Hall, we will make our
way back into the sanctuary for
a day of singing and good
fellowship. There will be no
evening service.
Please make plans to be with
us on November 4 beginning at
10:00 for Sunday school. You
are most welcome, and it will
be good to see old friends again.
October 31 is
Reformation
Day
Reformation Day, October
31st, is a watershed date
profoundly affecting western
history. In our day we celebrate
Halloween. We pay little
attention to the more significant
events that shook Europe in
1517 and then shaped early
America. We tend to play down
religion. “It’s a private matter,”
we say. We want people to keep
their religious convictions out
of the public square. That was
not the case in Martin Luther’s
day. He provoked public debate
with the organized church on
core beliefs.
Those core beliefs had to do
with eternity and the life to
come. We talk very little about
eternity. It’s today that counts.

It’s the physical world that’s
important not the realm of the
spirit. But if we are like Martin
Luther we lug around a heavy
conscience. We carry a weight
of guilt on our backs. How do
we find release from these
burdens? All the material
goodies in the world will not
heal our wounded souls.
Reformation Day celebrates
the answer Martin Luther
rediscovered over four hundred
and seventy-five years ago. It
has to do with God’s gracious
forgiveness received by faith in
Jesus Christ. “‘Come now, and
let us reason together,’ Says the
Lord, ‘Though your sins are as
scarlet. They will be as white as
snow; Though they are red like
crimson, They will be like
wool’” (Isaiah 1:18).

hast set my feet in a large room.
Have mercy upon me, O
LORD, for I am in trouble:
mine eye is consumed with

grief, and my years with
sighing: my strength faileth

my bones are consumed. I was
