Lee County Needs Additional
Volunteer Firefighters
While the Board of Commis
sioners are constructing new fire
stations, purchasing new trucks
and employing additional fire
fighters. Lee County needs addi
tional volunteer fire fighters at
three of its stations. The Chokee
- Smithville Station (Number
Seven) located on Highway 195.
Station Number Four located on
New York Road and the fire sta
tion in Leesburg.
While each fire station needs
eight to ten volunteers per station,
the Chokee - Smithville Station
has three volunteers and the sta
tion on New York Road are with
out any volunteers. Lee County
has 55 volunteers including six
females.
Volunteer firefighters in Lee
County must meet three require
ments. A volunteer must be a Lee
County resident, be at least 18
years of age and have a clean
driving record. New fire fighters
must complete a 120 hour course
called Fire Fighter I. This course
includes both written and practi
cal lessons. Participants must
pass state certification.
Many cities and counties
throughout the country use vol
unteer firefighters. The use of
volunteer firefighters allows
funding to be used to build addi
tional fire stations and purchase
and upgrade equipment including
fire trucks. To fully equip
firefighters, the cost exceeds sev
eral thousand dollars.
Once the volunteer firefighters
complete the 101 Firefighter 1
course, they are required to attend
training session on the third and
fourth Monday nights of each
month.
The volunteer firefighters say
they volunteer as a service to the
people. Several family members
are volunteers. Several volunteers
indicated that they consider the
other volunteers as their second
family.
Classes for volunteer
firefighters will be taught locally
at the Century Station. Volunteer
firefighters are paid $20.00 for
each fire run.
Lee Countians who would like
more information on becoming a
volunteer firefighter should call
435-5402.

the most heartbreaking moments
I have had as a groomer was when
an older lady who had been bring

asked me. with tears running
down her cheeks, if I could ‘find
a good home for my dog’ because
she was going into a nursing

There are lots more things to
think about and I’ll try to address
some in my next article. I’ll be
writing about what breed of dog

dogs are ‘low maintenance’ and
other things I think might be of
interest. Thanks for reading!

U.S. plans for peace and pre

meet with leaders from key
agencies and institutions. In

visited several military instal
