The South Georgia Warriors
are comprised of 13 young men
from Lee, Sumter and Macon
counties. The Warriors, coached
by Tim McCrary, Terry Hoffman
and Mike Ellis, have qualified for
the 2002 USSSA 15/U Interna
tional World Series in Florida in
July 2002. Teams from Great
Britain, Virgin Islands, Puerto
Rico and Cuba have already
qualified for the 2002 World Se
ries. The round robin format tour
nament included teams from Al
bany. Thomasville and Dawson.
The Warriors finished with a 4-1
record for the tournament with
their only loss coming in an ex
tra inning game against
Thomasville in the finals. The
players and fans had a great time
during the three days of games
in Dawson. The Warriors would
like to thank Thomas Diesel for
being such gracious hosts of the
tournament.
Game One
The Warriors faced Albany in
the opening round of the tourna
ment Friday night. After a ner
vous start by starting pitcher Ter
rell Hoffman, the Warriors settled
down and defeated Albany 10-3.
Albany jumped on Hoffman for
3 runs in the first inning on 1 hit
and a couple of walks. The War
riors offense couldn't get much
going in the first two innings
leaving runners in scoring posi
tion in both innings. The Warrior
bats came alive in the third in
ning. After a walk and stolen base
for Jeffrey Burdette, Hoffman
doubled but Burdette was called
out on a close play at home. Af
ter Hoffman stole third, Corey
Nichols singled him home. Cam
Ellis then tripled to score Nichols
to cut Albany's lead to 3-2.
Burdette came on in relief of
Hoffman in the third. After a
leadoff walk. Burdette picked off
the runner at first. After a fly out,
Albany singled and stole second.
The next batter reached on a
misplayed ball to centerfield. but
Alan MacDonald threw a perfect
strike to catcher Tim McCrary to
nail the runner at home to end the
inning. The Warriors scored 8
runs in the fourth to put the game
away. MacDonald singled.
Branden Hoffman had an RBI
triple to left. Ronnie Wilson
reached on a missed third strike
and Josh Oliver walked to load
the bases. Burdette brought in
two with a single to right center.
T. Hoffman brought in two more
on a single up the middle. Ellis'

double plated another run and he
would later score on a passed ball.
Game Two
The Warriors met the host team.
Thomas Diesel Service, in the
second game of the tourney Sat
urday morning. The Warriors kept
up their offensive onslaught scor
ing 10 runs again and defeated the
host 10-0. The story of this game
was the Warrior pitching and de
fense. Jeffrey Burdette (1-0)
started on the hill for the Warriors
and was perfect for two innings
retiring the first six batters he
faced, striking out 3. Cam Ellis
came on in the third and followed
Burdette's lead. The Warriors
flirted with a perfect game until
a lead off walk in the fourth.
However, a 6-4-3 double play by
Corey Nichols, Corey Gamble
and Alan MacDonald kept Ellis
out of trouble and the no-hitter in
tact. Ellis retired the first two bat
ters in the fifth on strikes but hit
the next batter with an inside
fastball. Ellis then struck out the
next batter to close the game and
preserve the combined no-hitter.
Burdette and Ellis faced one bat
ter over the minimum, striking
out 9 of 16 batters. Terrell
Hoffman was 2/2 with 1 REI,
Branden Hoffman was 1/1 and
Ellis was 1/2 with a booming
home run that measured over
310'.
Game Three
The next game on Saturday
found the Warriors facing
Thomasville, a team that knocked
them out of an earlier tournament
in September. Thomasville has
qualified for the 2002 USSSA
World Series. This game was full
of suspense as the Warriors would

brought in Hill with a single to

staged their comeback in their
half of the sixth. Tim McCrary led
off with a walk, followed by a
double by Ellis. Nichols walked
to load the bases. The T'ville
pitcher settled down and struck
out the next two Warrior batters.
Wilson then worked a full count
and walked to score McCrary to
make it a one run ballgame.
Burdette then singled to bring in
Ellis and Nichols to take a 5-4
lead into the 7th inning. T'ville
threatened in the top of the 7th.
With one out. Burdette walked

ing position. The next T'ville bat
ter flew out to center for the sec
ond out and Burdette got the next
batter to ground out to second to
end the game.
Game Four
In the semi finals Saturday af
ternoon, the Warriors were re
matched with Thomas Diesel.
TDS apparently forgot about the
near perfect game, as they
knocked in three runs in the top
of the first inning. The Warriors
got one run back in the bottom of
the first. Terrell Hoffman singled
to open the inning. After stealing
second, Hoffman scored on Alan
MacDonald's single to center.
TDS posted runs in the top of the
2nd and 4th innings to extend
their lead to 5-1. The Warriors
tied the game up with 4 runs in
the bottom of the 4th. The War
riors loaded the bases after Cam
Ellis reached on an error.
MacDonald singled and Jeffrey
Burdette walked. Branden
Hoffman brought in two Warrior
runs with a single to center. Corey
Gamble's RBI single scored
Burdette and Brandon Fowler
brought in B. Hoffman with a
single to left field. The Warriors
took the lead in the bottom of the
5th. Tim McCrary walked, Ellis
singled and MacDonald reached
on an error to load the bases. Josh
Oliver's sacrifice fly to left scored
McCrary to give the Warriors the
lead. B. Hoffman picked up his
3rd REI with a single.
MacDonald scored on Gamble's
ground out to make the score 8-
5. TDS cut that lead to 8-7 in the
top of the 6th inning. With the
bases loaded, McCrary forced a
run down at third after a pick off
move froze the TDS runner to
record the first out. TDS runners
tagged and advanced to 2nd and
3rd after a fly out to right field.
Another walk loaded the bases
again for TDS. An errant pick off
throw allowed the runners to ad
vance and make the score 8-6.
TDS plated another run after a
