The Lee County Ledger, Wednesday, September 21, 2011, Page 11A
Southwest Lee County citizens were prom
ised, at least thought we were promised, a red
light at Hickory Grove Road and Highway 520
upon approval of the new Library Complex. This
is desperately needed, as this intersection is a
train-wreck waiting to happen. A red light would
eliminate the need to drop the speed limit, and
could stop the speeders approaching the Dou
blegate E-Z Mart light from the North.
Herbert Gladin does not live nor own property
in Lee County. What is his interest in Lee Coun
ty?
If we who own rental property will be required
to pay garbage bills for our tenants, must we
also monitor if they are feeding their children
nutritionist meals and attend church on Sunday
as well?
It is sad that we no longer have Seminole
Ramlins to read. So sorry to read of Jack Wing
ate's serious health problem.
Thanks Herbert Gladin for holding our commis
sioners' feet to the fire.
The list of garbage deadbeats is only those
not on the "water system". The inference is
that those on the system do not owe such fees.
So, the difference must be that, when on the
system, no pay means cutoff - a.k.a. no pickup.
Now, if cut off is a "hammer" for those folks, and
there is no "stinking garbage in the streets", tell
me, and us, again: “Why can't we cut off those
who do not pay?"
I just read the list. Yeah, tack the garbage
fees on to the tax bill!
Love reading the list of delinquent garbage ac
counts. They must not pay teachers enough.
Duffy, Muggridge, and Johnson I They've cre
ated another monster called a garbage tax and
now we don't hear a peep out of them. Is it cow
ardice, or chicken, or what? If they don't know
what to do they need to get on down the road
and make room for new commissioners.
I don't remember how long ago, but I think this
is the second episode of not properly taking care
of the money in the utilities services depart
ment. Do you resent the mismanagement of your
money?
Just made a special trip to the mailbox to
get the Ledger and read the list of deadbeats.
Absolutely appalling! Why don't we immediately
take back the cans on those owing over $200, for
starters, and provide their information to the
credit bureaus. On those owing over $500, let's
herd them to court - with others to follow. Doing
nothing is no longer an option. Good job, Ledger!
Let's act like we got some sense and make a
test. Take back the garbage can from all who
owe over $500 and let's see how much "stinking
garbage" there is in the streets for Ed Duffy to
worry about.
Commissioner Muggridge has not listened to the
people since he was elected. Why would anyone
think he would start now?
Since we have problems collecting for garbage,
how are we doing with property taxes? Let's
don't get behind on this one too!
Surely Commissioner Muggridge is not enter
taining the idea of running for office again. He's
got to know he won't get elected again.
Browsing the list of "unpaids", I noted some
folks also have not paid 2010 property taxes.
Only looked at 10 and three owe for both - in one
case taxes are late on 90 pieces of property.
Times are tough—for all of us - but how about
paying your bills like the rest of us? Or, is it time
for a tax sale yet?
Duffy is like the emperor with no clothes. Why
won't people close to him tell him that he's look
ing very disingenuous with this garbage fiasco.
Our county commissioners are acting like the
federal government. They have the, 'we know
what's best for you' mentality. Let's vote them
out!
So no one is telling Mrs. Johnson that they are
against the garbage fee being placed on taxes?
We need to start making phone calls.
$208,219.83 in uncollected delinquent fees is
sufficient cause for dismissal in my book.
Wake up, people! Almost a quarter of a million
$$$ of your money has been mismanaged by non
collection of garbage fees and the commissioners
don't even reprimand the person who is respon
sible. Let's get new commissioners.

Re-elect
Jerry Myrick
Smithville Mayor
Smithville, we have come a long way to
gether and we still have a long way to go.
Before I go any further I would like to
thank all the Smithville citizens for allow
ing me to serve as your mayor for the previous years.
During those years, new homes have been built, several
homes have been added to the city sewer, a new com
munity building built and a new fire EMS station serves
Smithville citizens.
During the years that I have served as your mayor, prop
erty taxes have not been raised.
If I am reelected, I intend to extend the sewer service to
the homes were it is not available and work with the Lee
County Economic Development Authority to attract new
businesses to Smithville.
Reelect me as your mayor so we can continue to strive
and work together for the best in Smithville.
Your mayor
