What the Bible Teaches
By Frank Taylor
The letter to the Co-
lossians was written
along with letters to the
Ephesians, Philippians
and Philemon by the
apostle Paul during his
first Roman imprisonment.
Paul enjoyed consider
able liberty although still
a prisoner of Rome (Acts
28:30). There are several
resemblances between the
letter to the Ephesians and
the letter to the Colossians;
yet, on closer examination,
there is no mere repetition.
Each Epistle has its domi
nant theme. In Ephesians
the emphasis is on the
Church, while Colossians
deals principally with the
Church’s Head, “the Lord
Jesus Christ.’’ When read
ing the Song of Solomon,
it is often hard to decide
whether the groom or bride
is being described. There
may be a purpose for this
difficulty as the bride be
comes the necessary part
of the groom — “bone of
my bone’’ (Genesis 3:23).
When this viewpoint is
taken, both the bride and
groom are alike. So it is in
Ephesians, the Church is
“His body, the fullness of
Him that filleth all in all.”
While in Colossians, the
Head, Christ is “the full
ness of the Godhead.”
There is reason to
believe that Paul had not
been in Colosse; he speaks
of the Church as having
not seen his face (Colos
sians 2:1). The Church was
the outcome of the labours
of Epaphras (Colossians
1:7) who was now a pris
oner with the Apostle (Phi
lemon 23). It is not hard to
conjecture that Epaphras
had recounted to Paul a
faithful history of the work
in Colosse (1:4; 8). During
the course of the narra
tive, Epaphras must have
revealed certain tenden
cies at work which were
dimming the otherwise
brilliant faith and love of
the Colossian Christians.
To expose these errors
and present the glorious
remedy was the immedi
ate occasion of the Epistle
to the Colossians. It has
been said that “The bird
that cannot be shot can be
snared.” If we are not the
kind that Satan can entice
into the sins of the flesh, he
will seek to snare us with
his subtleties. In Corinth
we see Satan using “the
gun”, here in Colosse it is
“the snare.” Leprosy can
manifest itself either in the
head or the body (Leviti
cus 13:42). Immorality or
doctrinal error can alike
cripple our communion
and usefulness; worse still,
damage the Lord’s work.
The doctrinal errors that
threatened the Colossians
were:
(1) “Philosophy” or ratio
nalism (Colossians 2:8)
(2) Legality (Colos
sians 2:14-17)
(3) Indirect approach
to God through angels
(Colossians 2:18),
(4) Ritualism (Colossians
2:20-23).
Because these doctrinal
errors are ever-present
perils, the Church needs to
be constantly on its guard
against them. In Chris
tendom, there are great
segments of the professing
Church that are completely
influenced by one or more
of the dangers that threat-

Solomon’s 700 wives
But king Solomon loved
many strange women,
together with the daughter
of Pharaoh, women of the
Moabites, Ammonites,
Edomites, Zidonians,
and Hittites; Of the na
tions concerning which
the LORD said unto the
children of Israel, Ye shall
not go in to them, neither
shall they come in unto
you: for surely they will
turn away your heart after
their gods: Solomon clave
unto these in love. And he
had seven hundred wives,
princesses, and three
hundred concubines: and
his wives turned away
his heart. For it came
to pass, when Solomon
was old, that his wives
turned away his heart after
other gods: and his heart
was not perfect with the
LORD his God, as was the
heart of David his father.
For Solomon went after
Ashtoreth the goddess of
the Zidonians, and after
Milcom the abomination
of the Ammonites. And
Solomon did evil in the
sight of the LORD, and
went not fully after the
LORD, as did David his
father. Then did Solomon
build an high place for
Chemosh, the abomination
of Moab, in the hill that is
before Jerusalem, and for
Molech, the abomination
of the children of Ammon.
And likewise did he for all
his strange wives, which
burnt incense and sacri
ficed unto their gods.
And the LORD was
angry with Solomon,
because his heart was
turned from the LORD
God of Israel, which had
appeared unto him twice,
And had commanded him
concerning this thing,
that he should not go after
other gods: but he kept
not that which the LORD
commanded. Wherefore
the LORD said unto
Solomon, Forasmuch as
this is done of thee, and
thou hast not kept my
covenant and my statutes,
which I have commanded
thee, I will surely rend the
kingdom from thee, and
will give it to thy servant.
Notwithstanding in thy
days I will not do it for
David thy father’s sake:
but I will rend it out of the
hand of thy son. Howbeit I
will not rend away all the
kingdom; but will give one
tribe to thy son for David
my servant’s sake, and for
Jerusalem’s sake which I
have chosen.
And the LORD stirred
up an adversary unto Solo
mon, Hadad the Edomite:
he was of the king’s seed
in Edom... And God
stirred him up another
adversary, Rezon the son
ofEliadah. ...
And the rest of the acts
of Solomon, and all that
he did, and his wisdom,
are they not written in
the book of the acts of
Solomon? And the time
that Solomon reigned in
Jerusalem over all Israel
was forty years. And Solo
mon slept with his fathers,
and was buried in the city
of David his father: and
Rehoboam his son reigned
in his stead.

ened the Colossian Church.
These errors assume differ
ent appearances to suit the
age, but in essence, they
are still the same.
The Epistle to the
Colossians opens with an
appropriate apostolic salu
tation characteristic of the
apostle Paul which contin
ues to verse 8. The Apostle
is alert to recognize all that
is praiseworthy about these
believers. Their faith was
in “the word of the truth
of the gospel” (Colossians
1:6). As Tertullian said,
“Truth is proved by what it
produces.” The Lord said,
“Men do not gather grapes
of thorns or figs of thistles”
(Matthew 7:16). A gospel
that makes men truthful
and holy must be truth.
How important it is to
explain our gospel by our
lives! We are also told that
this gospel had gone into
“all the world” (Colossians
1:6). In a matter of thirty
years, it had spread through
the ancient world, just as it
has gone generally to the
ends of the earth today.
A Chinese once asked an
American why he had the
unashamed boldness to
bring his religion to China.
The appropriate reply was,
“The right to give to others
something that is too good
to keep.”
