Soul Food
from the Hood
by Keith Hood
We had sought God’s
blessing. Indeed,
we had sought to
bless God. Satur
day night in the
Philema Baptist
Church building,
we did just that.
Nearly twenty
churches had come
for an interdenomi
national event. The
event was a promo
tion for our local
radio station--WWVO, The
Voice, 90.7 FM. WWVO’s
purpose is to glorify God
by using music of various
genres and using national
Bible teaching programs
such as Ravi Zachariahs,
David Jeremiah, and
Charles Stanley just for
beginning.
Saturday night was a
night when we had a spe
cial concert to help raise
money for some unexpect
ed challenges brought on
by lightning striking their
radio tower. We started
with Grafted-In, a men’s
quartet that is based out
of Philema Road Baptist
Church. I am blessed to
be a part of this group. I
sing bass. We sing mostly
Southern Gospel Music but
spice it with a little Gospel
bluegrass. Grafted-In was
followed by Alanna Fox.
Alanna is 14 years old and
has a sterling and power
ful voice. She brought
the people to their feet on
more than one occasion.
She was followed by the
Hood Family. I sing bass
in that group, too. There
are live of us who empha
size reflecting the shekinah
glory of God with the
harmony with which God
has gifted us. We have
a repertoire of anything
from African-American
spirituals to Contempo
rary Christian. Saturday
was pretty much Southern
Gospel and a couple with
a bluegrass twist. We also
did an acappella number.
We were then followed by
a surprise guest. She is the
12 year young daughter of
David Morgan,
the station man
ager. Twice, I
used the word
“precious” to
describe her. I
wasn’t the only
one to use that
term. This was
her inaugural
singing.
Speaking
of inaugural.
The Spicer Family was
the main group for the
evening. They sang for
President Ronald Reagan’s
Inauguration. Momma
Spicer plays the piano
with a vigor that portrays
raw joy. There were many
high-lights to the evening.
For me, she ranks among
the top. They announced
she’s 77 years of age. She
used to train her children
for eight hours a day when
they were just single digits
in age. Today, they are
consumate professionals.
More importantly, they
brought attention to the
Savior. Backing them up
were Dennis and Joey
Thompson. Dennis sang
a couple a songs on his
on after the Spicers. The
Spicers came back on and
closed out the program
for us.
As I type this article, I
am listening to WWVO on
the internet. I encourage
you to discover your broth
ers and sisters in Christ
by visiting their web-site
at www.wwvothevoice.
com. I’ve come to know
and love them over the past
nearly three years work
ing with Cross Cultural
Musique. If your church is
having an event and would
like it publicized, WWVO
will include you on the
Community Calendar.
God has given the vision
of WWVO to Dr. Bill
Eidenire and he has been
faithful to see it come to
fruition. His mission is to
glorify God. I believe he is
on target.

new school choice pro
grams this year than ever
before. This has led many
to dub 2011 as “the year of
school choice.”
That’s the word from a
leading organization that
promotes school choice,
with a specific focus on
advocating for school
vouchers and scholarship
tax credit programs.
According to the Ameri
can Federation for Chil
dren (AFC), in just the
first half of the year alone,
legislation to expand or
create new school voucher
or scholarship tax credit
programs was passed in
11 states and Washington,
D.C.
Vouchers and scholarship
tax credits are intended
to allow low- and middle-
income families to send
their children to the schools
that best suit them, whether
those schools are private,
traditional public or public
charter schools.
“This has been a signifi
cant year for educational
freedom nationwide,” said
Betsy DeVos, the chairman
of the AFC.
