What the Bible Teaches
From The Bible
By Jerry Kingery
By Frank Taylor
The true Church, which
is not the building, but is
made up of every person
who has accepted the
Lord Jesus Christ as their
personal Savior, is now
in the process of being
constructed. Every time a
soul is saved, a living stone
is added to the building of
the Church. The edifice is
rising silently without the
sound of a hammer. The
Holy Spirit adds daily to
the Church such as should
be saved (Acts 2:47).
One day soon, the build
ing of the Church will be
finished. The last stone will
be added, and the Lord
Jesus will descend into the
air (1 Thess. 4:16-17). As if
drawn by a divine magnet,
the Church will rise to
meet the Savior in the air
(1 Thess. 4:17), and so shall
we ever be with the Lord (1
Thess. 4:17). It will be the
Church’s blessed portion
not only to be with Christ
forever, but also to share
the glories which He won
during His earthly career
(John 17:22).
Throughout eternity the
Church is destined to be an
eternal witness to the glory
of God. “That in the ages
to come He might show
the exceeding riches of
His grace in His kindness
toward us through Christ
Jesus’’ (Eph. 2:7).
In the meantime, the
Church is God’s master
piece on the earth - an
object lesson to principali
ties and powers in heav
enly places of the manifold
wisdom of God. Every be
liever should therefore be
vitally interested to grow
in the grace, knowledge
and wisdom of the Lord
Jesus Christ. The believer
should get into a body of
believers and be taught
Bible doctrines through a
Pastor-Teacher that God
has ordained in the Church,
and his Christian service
should have the expan
sion and edification of the
Church as one of its prima
ry aims. While Christian
service is commendable it
does not add anything to
your salvation. What you
will take into eternity is
your growth and maturity
in Bible doctrine. For the
growth and maturity of the
Church, God has ordained
gifts to individuals in the
Church for perfecting of
the saints for the work of
the ministry and building-
up the Church (Eph. 4:
12). Every believer has a
gift and God will reveal
your gift as you grow and
mature in Bible doctrine.
These spiritual gifts are
found in Ephesians 4:11.
We see in 1 Corinthi
ans 12:8-10 another list of
spiritual gifts: wisdom,
knowledge, faith, the gifts
of healing, the working
of miracles, prophecy,
discerning of spirits, div
ers kinds of tongues, and
interpretation of tongues.
There is no necessary
contradiction between the
two lists. While the gifts
in Ephesians 4 are specific
to individuals whose whole
career, apparently, is given
over to evangelism, teach
ing, or pastoral work, the
gifts in 1 Corinthians 12,
are endowments or abili
ties which are not neces
sarily limited to certain
individuals but which the
Holy Spirit may give to
any member of the Body
of Christ at any time He
chooses. For instance, any
Christian may be Spirit-led
to give a “word of wisdom’’
or a “word of knowledge’’
and yet not be exactly
a teacher. Another may
be able to point a soul to
Christ and yet not be an
evangelist.
Again, in 1 Corinthi
ans 12:28, Paul speaks of
apostles, prophets, teach
ers, miracles, gifts of heal
ing, helps, governments,
and diversities of tongues.
This diversity of tongues
mentioned here is basically
when a person speaks in
their own language it is
heard in another language
by individuals who does
not understand your lan
guage.
The question inevitably
arises here as to whether
we still have gifts of a
miraculous nature today
(i.e. speaking in tongues).
In Hebrews 2:4, it is stated
that God used signs and
wonders to authenticate
the early preaching of the
Gospel. This was in days
before the complete Word
of God was available in

in the Albany Kiwanis “Ki-
wanian of the Year Award”
for 2011. This award goes
to an outstanding Kiwanian
who has demonstrated out
standing service to the club
written form. Many believe
that with the coming of the
complete Bible, the need
for these gifts ceased. The
Bible does not settle the
matter decisively. While
we believe that the miracle
gifts mentioned above are
not with us today, gener
ally speaking, we cannot
say that the sovereign
Spirit is not at liberty to
use them still, especially
on those mission fields
where the Scriptures are
not extensively available.
In any event, those who
do profess to have these
miraculous gifts must be
careful to use them in ac
cordance with the instruc
tions of the Word of God
(for example, the use of
tongues is regulated in 1
Corinthians 14).

Solomon’s 700 wives
But king Solomon loved
many strange women,
together with the daughter
of Pharaoh, w Counsel of
old men
And Rehoboam went to
Shechem: for all Israel were
come to Shechem to make
him king. And it came to
pass, when Jeroboam the
son of Nebat, who was yet
in Egypt, heard of it, (for
he was fled from the pres
ence of king Solomon, and
Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)
That they sent and called
him. And Jeroboam and all
the congregation of Israel
came, and spake unto Re
hoboam, saying, Thy father
made our yoke grievous:
now therefore make thou
the grievous service of thy
father, and his heavy yoke
which he put upon us, light
er, and we will serve thee.
And he said unto them,
Depart yet for three days,
then come again to me. And
the people departed. And
king Rehoboam consulted
with the old men, that stood
before Solomon his father
while he yet lived, and said,
How do ye advise that I may
answer this people? And
they spake unto him, saying,
If thou wilt be a servant
unto this people this day,
and wilt serve them, and an
swer them, and speak good
words to them, then they
will be thy servants for ever.
But he forsook the counsel
of the old men, which they
had given him, and con
sulted with the young men
that were grown up with
him, and which stood before
him: And he said unto
them, What counsel give
ye that we may answer this
people, who have spoken
to me, saying, Make the
yoke which thy father did
put upon us lighter? And
the young men that were
grown up with him spake
unto him, saying, Thus
shalt thou speak unto this
people that spake unto thee,
saying, Thy father made our
yoke heavy, but make thou
it lighter unto us; thus shalt
thou say unto them, My
little finger shall be thicker
than my father’s loins. And
now whereas my father did
lade you with a heavy yoke,
I will add to your yoke: my
father hath chastised you
with whips, but I will chas
tise you with scorpions. So
Jeroboam and all the people
came to Rehoboam the
third day, as the king had
appointed, saying, Come
to me again the third day.
And the king answered the
people roughly, and forsook
the old men’s counsel that
they gave him; And spake
to them after the counsel
of the young men, saying,
My father made your yoke
heavy, and I will add to
your yoke: my father also
chastised you with whips,
but I will chastise you with
scorpions. Wherefore the
king hearkened not unto the
people; for the cause was
from the LORD, that he
might perform his saying,
which the LORD spake by
Ahijah the Shilonite unto
Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
So when all Israel saw
that the king hearkened
not unto them, the people
answered the king, say
ing, What portion have
we in David? neither have
we inheritance in the son
of Jesse: to your tents, O
Israel: now see to thine own
house, David. So Israel de
parted unto their tents. But
as for the children of Israel
which dwelt in the cities of
Judah, Rehoboam reigned
over them.
