National Career, Technical and Agricultural Education Month
Special to the Ledger
February is national
Career, Technical, and
Agricultural Education
month. Mayor Quinn will
sign a proclamation in rec
ognition of this event. The
Lee county school system
has a first class CTAE
department that begins at
the middle school level and
extends to the high school.
It is directed by Mrs.
Sandra Parker. The courses
taught in the department
give real life applications
to the skills students learn
in their academic courses.
CTAE classes challenge
students to combine those
academic skills to craft
solutions to situations and
problems they are likely to
encounter in the work set
ting, as well as providing
opportunities to develop
job skills.
CTAE classes are part
of a Pathway, which is a
series of courses in a dis
cipline area. Each Pathway
includes Career Student
Organizations (CTSO) that
are an extension of the
pathway. Each CTSO has,
as a part of its mission, a
duty to provide community
service in an event that
is intended to make the
community a better place
to work and live. They also
allow students to compete
with other students from
across the state and nation
in skill demonstrations.
State and national winners
can win scholarships and
equipment. Among the
CTSO’s and Pathways of
fered at our high school are
the following:

New Liberty Expressway On-Ramp Set
to Open, Jefferson Street Traffic to Shift
Special to the Ledger
Getting on the Liberty
Expressway from Jeffer
son Street will be easier
next month when the new
westbound on-ramp opens
as part of the reconstruc
tion of the interchange, a
Georgia Department of
Transportation project that
is ahead of the scheduled
Dec. 31 completion date.
Contractor Oxford Con
struction Co. of Albany
also will shift traffic on
Jefferson Street to work
on the middle lanes. The
traffic shift and opening of
the on-ramp are scheduled
to happen Feb. 3.
Opening of the ramp
means drivers won’t have
to loop-the-loop to go west
on state Route 3/Liberty
Expressway. The old loop
ramp will be removed
once the new one is open.
All traffic, from Jefferson
Street or Philema Road,
will use the new on-ramp.
Southbound Jefferson
Street traffic from Philema
Road to the overpass will
be shifted to the right onto
newly-constructed asphalt.
Northbound Jefferson
Street traffic will remain
in its current location until
north of Philema Road,
where the inside lane will
be closed. All northbound
traffic will shift to the out
side (right) lane. Message
boards will be installed
prior to the shift to alert
drivers to the new traffic
patterns.
The traffic shift also
will affect traffic going to
and from Telfair Avenue
because a raised concrete
median will be installed
on Jefferson Street at that
intersection. Left turns
will no longer be allowed
from Telfair Avenue onto
Jefferson Street or from
southbound Jefferson
Street onto Telfair Avenue.
Drivers will have to take
Philema Road and then
Jewel Street to reach Tel
fair Avenue. This change
will be permanent.
Work continues on the
new westbound exit ramp
that will replace the old
ramp. When construction
is complete, the westbound
exit and on ramps will
be directly across from
Philema Road, creating a
four-legged intersection.
The new ramps required
construction of bridges
over North Jefferson Street
and the railroad.
The project also includes
widening Jefferson Street
from the Liberty Express
way overpasses to Philema
Road - adding turn lanes,
sidewalks, a raised median
and bike lanes.
Reconstruction of the
interchange in order to
improve safety and reduce
congestion began in 2013
and is about 62% com
plete. The construction
contract amount is $13.1
million.
Anchorage To Hold
Annual Meeting
The Anchorage will
hold its annual meeting
in celebration of 61 years
of service to Albany and
Southwest Georgia.
The program for the
annual meeting includes
inspiring music and
worship, installation of
new board members and
personal testimonials from
a client, alumni and family
member. Dr. Mary Brown
Heritage will be a special
guest.
The Anchorage’s an
nual meeting will be held
at First Linked Methodist
Church in Walden Chapel
at 7:00 p.m. on February
5. First Linked Methodist
Church is located at 307
Flint Ave. in downtown
Albany.

Traveling Tips & Trips
Special to the Ledger
By Bland Cleesattle
April is just around the
corner, and with that month
it brings to mind all of
the beautiful flowers that
seem to come to life with a
variety of colorful blooms.
I don’t know about you but
now that I am retired when
I drive I find myself plan
ning my route down some
of the beautiful
Albany streets lined with
a canopy of live oak trees
planned out years ago by
Albany’s Planning Com
mission. I have never been
down any street in the LI.S.
that hold a candle to these
in the spring. However
there is one other such
town that I want to tell you
about today, and that is
Eufaula, AL.
At this particular period
of time, Eufaula is battling
the State of Alabama, who
want to widen Highway 82
or North Eufaula Avenue
which will take away the
median in the center of this
street in which there are
beautiful live oaks and aza
leas similar to our Second,
Third and Tenth Avenues
in Albany. North Eufaula
Avenue is known as The
Seth Lore and Irwinton
Historic District, which is
the largest in East Alabama
and the second-largest in
Alabama. In this area are
also some of the over 700
structures the town boasts
of that are on the National
Register of Historic Places
In 1965, The Eufaula
Heritage Association was
formed to prevent the loss
and destruction
of the town’s
historic trea
sures. The As
sociation then
purchased the
Shorter Man
sion at auction,
and made it the
headquarters
for both the
Association
and the an
nual Eufaula
Pilgrimage.
The mansion is
located in about the center
of portion of North Eu
faula Avenue in which the
widening of the highway
is scheduled to take place.
Within Shorter Mansion is
home to a museum honor
ing six Alabama governors
from Barbour County, as
well as Admiral Thomas
Moorer, a former Chair
man of the joint Chiefs
of Staff. The mansion is
opened Monday through
Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
for $5 per adult or $3 for
ages 5 to 12, and also can
be used for special events
such as the Spring Eufaula
Tour of Homes, which will
take place on Saturday,
April 11 beginning at 9
a.m.
Several years ago, we
chartered a train that
reserved the tracks from
Sasser, GA to Eufaula,
Alabama just to take us to
Bland Cleesattle
Eufaula’s Tour of Homes.
We had over 100 members
who joined us for this trip.
Our charter
motor coach
es met us in
Eufaula and
transported
us to many
of the homes
that were not
in walking
distance of
Shorter Man
sion. We also
enjoyed their
tea garden,
and those of
us who en
joyed walking participated
in their tour with a guide
who told us the history of
each house along our route.
I encourage you to partici
pate in this tour of homes
as well as the tour of homes
offered in both Cuthbert,
and Dawson, Georgia. If
you enjoy architecture in
these homes you will find
incredible work of master
craftsmen produced in our
beautiful southern portion
of the Linked States.
If you are interested in
knowing more about Eu
faula’s fight to save North
Eufaula Avenue, about
Shorter Mansion, or to
participate in their tour of
homes you might call 334-
687-3793 or 1-888-383-
2852, which is toll free, and
grow within the park.
One of our warm up
exercises for sitting in con
fined spaces is called the
