Georgia DNR Continues
Search For Primate: Asks
Hunters To Report Sightings
Special to the Ledger
Continued sightings
of a small primate, be
lieved to be a Rhesus
macaque, continue to
come in to the Geor
gia Department of
Natural Resources over
the past week. How
ever, the animal is still
reported to be on the
loose.
Sightings this
week have been be
tween Smithville and
Americus, and in
Plains. The Depart
ment evaluates all
reported sightings to
determine if follow-up
actions are warranted.
The origin of the an
imal is still unknown.
No nearby facilities
permitted for primates
are missing any ani
mals, and the closest
known established
population is located in
Silver Springs, Florida.
DNR officials want
the public to be aware
that this is a wild
animal, and should not
be approached, fed or
handled in any way.
Rhesus macaques can
carry the Herpes B
virus, harmless to the
animal, but potentially
lethal if contracted by
humans. These animals
also have the ability to
spit or throw fecal mat
ter, and can potentially
be aggressive relative
to food.
As hunting season
approaches (Georgia
dove season opens
Sept. 3; Georgia deer
archery season opens
Sept. 10), DNR urges
hunters in counties
where the primate
has been seen to be
observant while in
the woods. Under no
circumstances should
the animal be handled,
whether it is found
dead or alive. Report
all sightings immedi
ately.
Due to these pub
lic safety and health
concerns, if anyone
sees the animal, please
call the Georgia
Department of Natu
ral Resources, Game
Management Office
in Albany at 229-430-
4254 or after normal
business hours call the
State Operations Cen
ter at 1-800-241-4113.
