Heaven Can Be Our Home!
By Charles Harris
Pastor, Beattie Road
Church of Christ
Heaven! The very
word itself brings a
pleasant calm and joyful
spirit
when we
hear it.
Heaven!
Where
we get to
be with
the Lord
Himself
forever
and ever!
Where
we get
to be united with the
redeemed of all time!
Heaven! This life is
the only “preparation
opportunity” that we
have for heaven! God
has graciously shown
us the way (and what a
glorious way it is!), but
once this life has passed,
there are no “do-overs”
or “second chances.”
And, we cannot afford
to miss heaven! Think
for a moment
what that
means to
each of us.
If Scripture
has anything
to do with go
ing to heaven,
we cannot
afford to be
wrong about
the authority
of Scripture!
It is only through God’s
Word that we know
anything about heav
en and anything about
how to get to heaven.
Of course, “There is a
way that seems right
to a man” (Proverbs
14:12), but it “is the way
of death,” not of eternal
life. Only Jesus has “the
words of eternal life”
(John 6:68), therefore, it
is has been placed upon
us, through the demands
of Scripture, to “do
all in the name of the
Lord Jesus” (Colossians
3:17). His Word must
be our sole authority in
religious matters, for
only through obedience
thereto can we enter and
enjoy the blessings of
heaven (Matthew 7:21).
If baptism has any
thing to do with going
to heaven, we cannot
afford to be wrong
about the purpose of
baptism! Our deadliest
affliction today is sin,
for sin separates us from
God now (Isaiah 59:1-2)
and unforgiven sin will
keep us from going to
heaven (1 Corinthians
6:9; Galatians 5:21). Our
greatest need today is
the complete removal of
every sin we commits,
which is only possible
through the blood of Je
sus (Revelationl:5). God
(not any man) tied the
washing away of one’s
sins directly to one’s
submission to immer
sion (Mark 16:16; Acts
2:38; 22:16; Romans 6:3-
4). Therefore, baptism
of penitent believers is
essential to enter and
enjoy the blessings of
heaven (John 3:3-7).
If the church has any
thing to do with going
to heaven, we cannot
afford to be wrong about
the identification of the
church! The church of
the New Testament is
not of human origin but
of Divine origin (Isaiah
2:2-4; Matthew 16:18).
It is not comprised of
varying denominational
organizations (Galatians
1:6-12; John 17:20-
21) but is singular (as
taught in Scripture) in
its doctrine and practice
(Ephesians 4:4; 1 Corin
thians 1:10; 1 Peter 4:11).
Human organizations
are not essential for eter
nal life, but only those
who are part of Christ’s
kingdom will enter and
enjoy heaven (1 Corin
thians 15:24; Hebrews
12:23).
To depart from this life
and to “be with Christ...
is very much better”
(Philippians 1:23). We
cannot afford to miss
heaven; therefore, we
cannot afford to be
wrong about heavenly
things!
If we follow the teach
ing of God, we don’t
have to miss Heaven.
His Word teaches that if
we believe Jesus is the
Son of God, repent of
sin, and are baptized,
His blood will then
wash us clean (Mark
16:16; Acts 2:38; Acts
22:16; Revelation 1:5).
Continuing in faith
fulness based upon the
teaching of the New
Testament and Heaven
will be our eternal home
(1 Corinthians 15:58;
Revelation 2:10).

What Does The Bible

Hayes, 6.
Hayes, you’re thinking
like me. You need a lot
of grace for life’s truth
timeouts. In Jesus, we
see the perfect balance
of grace and truth.
“And the Word became
flesh and dwelt among
us, and we beheld His
glory, the glory as of
the only begotten of the
Father, full of grace and
truth” (John 1:14).
The word “dwelt” as
in the Word or Jesus
dwelling among us has
a history in the Old Tes
tament. The word can be
translated “tabernacled.”
Moses constructed the
Ark of the Covenant and
placed it in a tent so that
God dwelt among his
people as they wandered
in the desert.
Pastor Emile Wolfaardt
puts it this way: “A little
more than 2000 years
ago God stepped onto
our earth, pitched His
tent and set up camp
right in the middle of
us all. That is what the
word ‘dwelled’ can
mean - to set a tent.
In other words, the
Word became flesh and
pitched His tent among
us. And when He did
that it was the most pro
found revelation of God
man would ever know
on this earth.”
Theologian J.C. Ryle
eloquently writes of
the grace and truth that
came together in the
person of the Lord Jesus
Christ: “This constant
undivided union of
two perfect natures
in Christ’s Person is
exactly that which gives
infinite value to His
mediation, and quali
fies Him to be the very
Mediator that sinners
need. Our Mediator is
One who can sympa
thize with us, because
He is very MAN. And
yet, at the same time,
He is One who can deal
with the Father for us on
equal terms, because He
is very GOD.”
Ryle gives one of the
best explanations ever
placed in print of how
grace and truth came
together in the person of
the Lord Jesus Christ.
You may want to read it
again.
When I think of
grace, the words of the
Lord Jesus on the cross
come to mind: “Father,
forgive them, for they
do not know what they
do” (Luke 23:34). Truth
demands justice, but
forgiveness is grace in
action.
The truth behind the
unjust trial and cruci
fixion of Jesus is that he
could have snapped his
fingers and annihilat
ed his accusers. Jesus
allowed himself to be
falsely accused, unjustly
whipped and brutally
crucified as a common
