Nearly 400 incoming freshmen begin
classes at Georgia Southwestern
Special to the Ledger
On August 19, just
under 400 incoming
freshmen began classes
at Georgia Southwestern
State University (GSW)
in GSW’s Class of 2023.
At the Freshman Con
vocation held August
18, each student was
given a silver coin by
GSW President Dr. Neal
Weaver to signify the
beginning of their GSW
journey. Upon gradu
ation, they’ll receive a
gold coin in its place,
giving the silver coin
to someone who made
a difference for them
during their time at
GSW.
The Class of 2023
is the first class to
bring in more than 200
students with the new
Southwestern Promise
scholarship available to
Georgia freshmen. The
scholarship program,
established in Hurricane
Michael’s aftermath,

After a summer break
that was filled with seven
art camps, two popu
lar monthly events for
children and students are
returning to the Albany
Museum of Art in Sep
tember.
Toddler Takeover,
which begins at 10:30
am, starts its new season
on Tuesday, Sept 3, 2019.
That program aimed at
youngsters 15 months to
3 years old takes place on
the first Tuesday of the
month.
Homeschool Day,
geared toward homes-
chooled students in K-5th
grade, will return on
Thursday, Sept 12, 2019.
It is conducted on the
second Thursday of the
month.
Each month has a theme
that is coordinated with
exhibitions on view in the
AMA galleries.
“We expect to have
great participation again,”
said Annie Vanoteghem,
director of education and
public programming for
the AMA. “We take a
summer break because
of our heavy schedule of
art camps and the fact
that families travel a
good deal in the summer
months.
“Now, fall is just around
the corner and school is
back in session, so we’re
excited to offer these
engaging educational
programs to homeschool
students and our young
est museum guests.”
At Toddler Takeover,
children visit a gallery,
do an art project and have
story time.

sizes STEAM (science,
technology, engineering,
art and math) curriculum.
“It’s an excellent way
for young people to get
exposed to art and learn
while having fun,” Vano
teghem said.
Toddler Takeover is free
to AMA members and $5
for non-members. While
it is aimed at toddlers, the
program is family-friend

receive the scholarship
upon application.
