Four students in
the Diesel Equipment
Technology program at
South Georgia Technical
College (SGTC) were
awarded the South Geor
gia Technical College
Foundation Caterpillar
Excellence Scholarships
recently in recognition
of their hard work, work
ethics and grade point
averages.
Donald A. Gay and
Jeremy Huiras of Lees
burg, GA along with
Bernard M. Bryan, III
of Buena Vista, GA, and
Bo J. Snider of Mitchell,
GA were the students
selected to receive the
Caterpillar Excellence
Scholarships. Each stu
dent received over $1660
to use to purchase tools
for their chosen career
field.
Gay is a recent gradu
ate of the SGTC Diesel
Technology program and
the other students will
be graduating in the next
one or two semesters.
Each of the students are
already gainfully em
ployed in the industry to
hone their skills.
Donald A. Gay grad
uated from the Diesel
Technology program
in May and is current
ly employed with John
Deere at Flint Equipment
in Albany, GA. “During
my job interview with
John Deere, the question
was asked if I went to a
technical college. I told
him yes, South Georgia
Technical College. The
person interviewing me
was very impressed when
I spoke of South Geor
gia Tech and agreed that
SGTC was a good choice
if you were interested in
joining the diesel career
path.”
Gay had always liked
working on his motorcy
cles, vehicles, and small
engines but acknowl
edged that out of the
three engine paths (small
engine, gasoline, or
diesel), diesel careers are
the one currently in high
demand. Even though
he had very limited
knowledge in the diesel
engine field, he searched
the internet and word of
mouth for the best place
to learn those skills,
technics, and the under
standing of equipment
and the proper way to use
those tools. Gay landed at
South Georgia Technical
College and the rest is
history.
He took advantage of
the “complete college
experience” at South
Georgia Tech. Gay
lived on-campus, was
President of the Student
Government Association,
participated in SkillsUSA
and other student activi
ties, and graduated with
honors. And best of all,
he was hired in his field
before graduation.
“I am so grateful for
this scholarship,” said
Gay. “My experience at
South Georgia Technical
College was wonderful
and I really enjoyed the
hands-on classes as well
as the mental aspects of
learning how things work
and how to troubleshoot
problems. This is really
going to help me com
plete my tool box for my
new job.”
Another Leesburg
student, Jeremy Huiras,
is a second-year student
in the Diesel program
and is set to graduate in
December 2022. Before
choosing South Georgia
Technical College, he
attended Lee County
High School. “I struggled
throughout both middle
and high school and often
times I gave my teachers
and administrators a hard
time. Attending South
Georgia Technical Col
lege’s Diesel Technology
program has given me
another opportunity and
it has taught me respon
sibility and what it will
be like in the real-world
using hands on learning,”
said Huiras.
“If I had not applied at
South Georgia Tech, I am
not sure where I would be
today. This program has
opened many new doors
for me and given me
many great job opportu
nities,” added Huiras.
Huiras’ family has a
history of Diesel Me
chanics. He has helped
his uncle work on big
tractors and heavy
machinery. “The more
I worked on that type
of machinery, the more
interesting and fun it
became to me. Trying to
figure out why something
is not working properly
is what makes the job
so fun. You never know
what is going to happen
and it is very rewarding
when you are able to fix a
problem.”
Huiras is planning to
use his scholarship funds
to purchase tools to help
him land a job with either
Yancey Caterpillar or
John Deere. “Having
the proper tools is very
important in the field of
work that I am going to
be in and this is a great
help,” added Huiras.
All four students
agreed another positive
aspect about their career
is knowing their jobs
will never be exported
oversees.
South Georgia Techni
cal College is currently
accepting new students
for Fall Semester. In

Technology program can

What You Miss by
Being a Christian
by Jonathan M.
LaBarge
Pastor of New Hope
Baptist Church
“There was a certain
rich man, which was
clothed in purple and
fine linen, and fared
sumptuously every day:
And there was a cer
tain beg
gar named
Lazarus,
which was
laid at his
gate, full of
sores, And
desiring to
be fed with
the crumbs
which fell
from the rich
man’s table: moreover
the dogs came and licked
his sores. And it came
to pass, that the beggar
died, and was carried by
the angels into Abra
ham’s bosom: the rich
man also died, and was
buried; And in hell he
lift up his eyes, being
in torments, and seeth
Abraham afar off, and
Lazarus in his bosom.” -
Luke 16:19-23
It seems that society,
in its quest for knowl
edge, understanding, and
intelligence, has dumbed
itself down to the point
that we cannot formu
late a sentence without
speaking in acronyms.
If you don’t believe me,
just go to the WWW
ASAP and BOLO for the
most popular ones, AKA
initialisms. IMO you’ll
BBS with a BEG LMK
that you were ROFL.
After all, the FOMO will
drive you to want know
what I’m talking about
BAE. BTW YOLO so
TTYL LOL!
While that may be a
bit of an exaggeration
in any case there is real
FOMO - Fear of Missing
Out when it comes to be
being a Christian. People
know YOLO - You Only
Live Once, and they
don’t want to miss out
on what this world has
to offer by becoming a
Christian. I’ve heard all
kinds of reasons why
being a Christian is no
fun, boring, and dull, or
that by being a Christian
it keeps you from miss
ing out on the greatest
things this life has to
offer. I have been a born
again Christian since I
was ten years old. I’ve
never done drugs, never
drank alcohol, never
smoked, never went to
prom or frat parties, and
was a virgin when I got
married. There is only
one thing that I missed
out on by choosing to
become a Christian, and
it’s the only thing that
any truly born again, Bi-
ble-believing Christian
misses out on - HELL!
As a Christian this
world is the only “hell”
I will ever know, but
for those lost in their
sins and without Christ,
this world is the only
“heaven” they will know
unless they repent of
their sins and call upon
the Lord Jesus Christ to
save them. This is what
was born out in the life
of the rich man and the
beggar, Lazarus, in our
text verses. The one had
all he could afford in this
life for fear of missing
out and went to hell
because he missed sal
vation. He missed what
was really important, the
eternal security of his
soul. The other had no
food, clothing, shelter, or
medical help, but he had
the eternal security of
his soul made sure. He
missed only one thing
by being a Christian.
He missed hell.
If you are a Christian,
let me remind you what
you are missing today.
If you are
lost with
out Christ
in your
life, let
me share
what will
be yours
one day
according
to the Bi
ble, God’s
Word.
Hell is a horrible tem
pest (Ps.ll:6).
Hell is a place of sor
rows (Ps.l8:5).
Hell is a devouring fire
and a place of everlast
ing burnings (Is.33:14).
Hell is a place of outer
darkness, weeping,
and gnashing of teeth
(Mt.8:12).
Hell is a place where
you never repent
(Mt.l2:31-32).
Hell is a furnace of fire
where you wail all the
time (Mt.l3:41-42).
Hell is a place of
everlasting punishment
(Mt.25:46).
Hell is a place where
your worm dieth not,
and the fire is not
quenched (Mk.9:48).
Hell is a place of
blackness and darkness
forever (Jude 13).
Hell is a place where
you are tormented with
brimstone, have no rest,
and from which the
smoke of your torments
ascendeth up forever.
(Rev.l4:10-ll).
Hell is a place where
you gnaw your tongue
while at the same time
curse God (Rev.l6:10-
11).
Hell is a bottomless
pit and lake of fire
(Rev.20:l,15).
Hell is a place of filthi
ness (Rev.22:10-ll).
Hell is a place of
torments where you
will cry for mercy and
pray but never have
your prayers heard or
answered, all the while
pleading for your loved
ones not to come there
(Lk. 16:23-24,27-28).
You may be thinking
to yourself at this very
moment, “How shall
we escape, if we neglect
so great salvation? ”
(Heb.2:3). The answer
- look to Jesus and be
saved! “For all have
sinned and come short
of the glory of God;”
(Rom.3:23). “For the
wages of sin is death;
but the gift of God is
eternal life through
Jesus Christ our Lord”
(Rom.6:23). “But as
many as received him, to
them gave he power to
become the sons of God,
even to them that believe
on his name:” (Jn.l:12).
Miss hell. Don’t miss
being a Christian.
