The Lee County Board
of Education held a bud
get hearing May 23 on
the proposed Fiscal Year
2024 budget. During
that public hearing, it
was discussed that the
proposed budget will
require a two mil tax
increase. A mil gener
ates $40 on property
valued at $100,000. If
the proposed budget is
approved and the mill-
age rate is increased two
mills, tax on a house
valued at $300,000
would increase $120.
Dr. Jason Miller, Su-
Life Works Well Here
WE ARE HIRING
perintendent, and Gary
Kelley, Comptroller,
explained to those in
attendance why a tax
increase was necessary
In 2021, the board of
education reduced the
millage rate from 18 to
15 mills because of the
tax digest reevaluation.
Then in 2022, as a result
of the tax digest increase
the school system lost
2.3 million dollars in
state funds through the
equalization funding.
Other factors creating
a need for a tax increase
as a result of COVID,
the school system ad
justed the non-certified
pay scale from a basis of
$7.50 per hour minimum
to $10.00 per hour mini
mum. This increased the
school system payroll
by $486,362.70 annu
ally The school system
also increased the local
supplement for teachers
by $500 in an effort to
compete with surround
ing school systems for
the declining pool of
applicants. The increase
totaled $280,786.00.
Inflation is affecting
the school system’s bud
get in regards to main
taining facilities, cost of
food for the cafeterias
and fuel for the buses.
The board of education
will conduct a second
budget hearing to give
citizens an opportunity
to discuss their views
on the proposed budget
in Monday, June 12th
at 5:00 p.m. The board
members will then meet
in a regular session at
5:30 p,m. that same day
to adopt the budget.
The meetings will be
held in the board room
at the central office at
126 Starksville Avenue
North in Leesburg.

Lee County Retired Educators work each month to do “Backpack
Blessings” for students in the two primary schools and the two
elementary schools in Lee County. Those working this month are (left
to right) Linda Kile, Kathy Entz, Georgia Temples, Penny Knight, and
Becky Jeffcoat. LCRE would like to thank Patsy Shirley and Charlotte
Vance for all they do for this wonderful program. The club considers
it a privilege to be able to help just a little with this project.
