Commissioners Reaffirm Telecommunications Tower Location
During the July 11th
county commission
meeting, the commis
sioners approved a
motion to locate the new
telecommunications tow
er at the fire station in
Smithville. The commis
sioners had previously
voted to locate the tower
at that location but then
agreed at a June board
meeting to consider
locating the tower on
county owned property
on Highway 118.
At the June meeting, a
Motorola representative
stated that both sites
would produce very
similar maps in terms of
coverage. He stressed the
importance of access to
and safety of the equip
ment and tower when
considering a location.
At that time, Vice-chair
man Luke Singletary
stated it would probably
be best to place the tower
at the fire station where
the equipment could be
monitored. Chairman
Mathis then suggested
Commissioner Dennis
Roland look at the two
presented sites and speak
to the staff and then
al, with the following
condition - that the
proposed development
must reduce impacts on
floodplains and wetlands,
if identified, to the extent
possible.
A public hearing was
held on Oakland Planta
tion Partners’ variance
application to allow the
following setbacks: 18’
front, 10’ rear, and 5’
side for each lot. This is
currently zoned R-2. The
total number of acres is
39.316. This property is
located off of Oakland
Parkway. The planning
commission recommend
ed approval with a 3 -2
vote.
Another public hear
ing was held on an
ordinance to amend
Chapter 70 of the Code
of Ordinances of Lee
County (the Lee County
Zoning Code) to amend
definitions as required
by 2022 Georgia Laws
Act 881 (HB 1405). The
Planning Commission
recommended approval
to amend the ordinance.
A public hearing was
held on an ordinance
to amend the Code of
Ordinances relating to
definitions under zoning
code to revise the defi
nition of “home occu
pation, residential”. The
Planning Commission
recommended denial
with a 4 -1 vote.
A public hearing was
held on an ordinance
to amend the code of
ordinances relating to
greenspace, to establish
the process to determine
unbuildable land and
undevelopable land. The
Planning Commission
recommended approval,
with an amendment of a
minimum of twenty-five
percent (25%) of the
remaining developable
land to be preserved as
greenspace regardless
of availability of county
water and sewer service.
Approval was given
to Milan Patel for a
proposed package store
offering retail sale of
off-premises consump
tion of liquor, wine, and
beer. The new business
will be constructed on
two vacant lots at 1302
and 1304 US Highway
82.

Bible Reading Held At Lee County Courthouse
It was a pleasant morning for the fifth annual Statewide Bible Reading at the Lee County
Courthouse on Friday, July 14th. at 7:14 a.m. At this statewide event held at courthouses
across Georgia, the entire Bible was read in an hour or less. The basis for this reading is taken
from 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people, who are called by my name will humble themselves,
and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven,
and forgive their sins and heal their land.” This verse is the reason the Bible is read each
year on July 14 at 7:14 a.m. Kelly Bruner Moore appeared before the county commissioners
in June and received approval to hold the event at the courthouse.
