THE COUNTRY WEEKLY.
Dr. George Hepworth, of The New
York Herald, who has been investi
gating the lynching questions in the
south, has been very much struck with
the power and influence of the countn
editor in Georgia. ‘'There seems :o
be a paper at every point where there
can be an excuse for its existence,’’
says Dr. Hepworth “The editor is
the mi in man at public functions.
He is the chief mourner at all funerals
the happiest man at all weddings, and
the proudest man, next to the father,
at till christenings. He is really a
a wonderful creations.'
All this is true in a larger sense in
Georgia than Dr. Hepworth has indi
cated in his genial summing up. There
is probably not a jstuto in the union
where the country editor lias greater
influence, or where the country week
ly lias achieved a larger degree of
prosperity in proportion to population
per many years there has been a sort
of competition among Georgia week
lies in regard to the character and ex
tent of their local and county news
service. This, in turn, has .aroused
friendly rivalr among neighborhoods
and settlements, and the result has
h- en to make the county paper a sort
of domestic institution, an indispensi
ule member of the family circle.
The editor and his county corres
pondents are friends and acquaint
ances of their subscribers, so that the
country weekly is m the tries! and
highest sense a family newspaper.
The editor comes in contact with the
majority of his subscribers, and is
never at a loss to know what the pub
lic opinion of Bis county is on any
question ofJJtnij ortance —lx ing mon
fort unate tn that respect than the edi
tor of the city daily.
Nevertheless, this knowledge does
not prevent the country editor from
fallowing his own convictions. He is
apt, indeed, to agree with the public
opinion of his cosrity, for the conolu
sions of a rural population are always
founded or. reason, common sense and
a stern desire to see justice done; but
should his own convictions not lie
parallel to those of his subscribers, the
country edito is free to advocate them
with such arguments and illustrations
as be can muster. In that respect he
is both fearless and indepenent. lie
knows that, his views .will m.eive a
fair aud patient hearing, and is as
sured that his independence will in-
volve no loss of patronage.
It is the fashion otbiewspapers tjjat
put oil metropolitan atrs to poke fun
at some of the methods of the country
weekly, but we [trust it will be long
before these methods cease to be
naive and provincial. These notes
are the basis of some of our most en
during literature and they have their
proper place in the local columns fa
country weekly. The homely twang;
the familiar, but not impertinent, ref
erence: the expression of thanks for a
present received; the friendly annauce
inent of an addition to a subscriber's
family; [the hilarious congratulations
when twins become a part of the local
population—all these things bring the
country editor closer to Ins subscriber
than the editor of a daily can ever get
and give him the influence and power
which friendship ever confers upon its
objects.
Dr. Hepworth is a very keen ob
server, indeed. While the fact that
lie has discovered | bout ill s country
editms in Georgia me plain enough to
those to the manner born, they do
not rudely present themselves tv th ■
eye of the ordinary [traveler or visitor
It may e that all country editors do
not live up to their opportunities; but
id Georgia during the past twenty five
years, the most of tile weeklies have
fallen into the hands of enthusiastic
an 1 ambitious young men; arid, in
pressing toward their own ideals of
country journalism, they have done a
great work for \ leorgia. 1 iiey have
olovaud the tone an i character of the
rural press, and hnqe been mdlspensa
l,!e aids to every movement looking
to the progress and prosperity of tae

THE ORPHANS HOME.
Rev'. H. I>. Crumley Has a Few
Words to Say About Them.
“Homeless” means a gteat deal to
a litile orphan child, The little
ekickens, calve, and animals are born
with instinct to care for themselves
Nine little ones came last week plead
mg by their utter destitution that the
Orphan’s Home at Decatur, Ga - , take
them in. Thaee from Whitesburg,
three from Augusta, and three from
Sharon, all destitute. The three from
Whitesburg had sorely bereaved, first
in the death of their excellent par
ents, then their grandfather was par
alyzed, and then their uncle and sup
porter died. They have no home or
penny, or kin able to care for them.
This is a sample of the many these
noble, unselfis'' Homes are caring for.
Only the absolute destitute can push
these doors open, but their Heigh lest
touch springs them open wide.
These institutions deserve the lib
eral support of the public, because
they make good, useful citizens of
those Who would probably become
beggars, it not criminals; second, they
give these tor whom none care, a
warm Irving home and excellent train
ic.g in work, school and moials; they
never ask the religion of deceased
parents, but tho dire need of the
cliihl. They promote public wealth
bv making wealth-producing eili/.ens-
They deserve liberal support. What
a joy to feel if you die, your child
need not suffer.
IL L. Crumley, Atlanta.

TOO MUCH SAID.
