ST. PETER
AT THE GATE
By One of America’s Humble
Hen Pecked Husbands
All good Homan CathoUcn be
lieve that Ht. I’eter keeps the gates
of Heaven, is constantly on the
job, and is a man rtf line discretion
and knows who to let in and who
shall stay out.
“Ht. I’eter stood guard at the
Golden Gate, with a solemn mein
and an air sedate, when up to the
top of the Golden Htair, a man and
a woman ascending there applied
for admission.
They came and stood Itefore Ht.
Peter, so great and good, in hopes
the City of Peace to win, and asked
Ht. Peter to let them in.
The woman was tall, and lank
and thin, with a scraggy beardlet
upon her chin, the man was short
and thick and stout—his stomach
was built so it rounded ont —his
face was plcsant, and all the while
he wore a kind and genial smile.
The chorus in the distance the
echoes woke, ami the man kept
still, while the woman spoke.
“Oh, thou who guards the gate,”
said she, ‘We come here, beseech
ing thee to let us enter the Heaven
ly land, and play our harps with
the Angel Baud.”
Of me, Ht. Peter, there is no
doubt,there’s nothing from Heaven
to bar me out; I’ve been to meeting
three times a week, and almost al
ways I’d rise to speak.
Pve told the sinners about the
Day when they’d repent of their
evil way; I’ye told my neighbors,
I’ve told em’ all, ’bout Adam and
Eve, and the primal fall. I’ve
shown them all what they’d have
to do, if they’d pass in with the
Chosen Few.
I’ve marked their path of duty
clear —laid out the place of their
whole career.
I’ve talked to ’em loud ami long,
for my lungs are good and my voice
is strong; so good St. Peter you’ll
plainly hoc, the (late of Heater) is
open to me.
Hut, my oM man, I regret to
say, hasn’t walked exactly the nar
row way; he smokes, and he swears,
and grave faults lie’s got, and I
don't know whether he’ll pass or
not.
He never would pray with an
earnest vim, or go to revival, or
join in a hymn; so 1 had to leave
him in sorrow there while! with
the Chosen united in prayer.
He ate what the pantry chanced
to afford, while 1 in purity sang to
the Lord; and if cucumbers were
all he got, it’s a chance he merited
them or not.
Hut, oh, St. Peter, 1 love him so,
to the pleasures of Heaven, please
let him go. I’ve done enough—a
Saint I've been—won’t that atonef
t an't you let him inf
But my grim Gospel, I know ’tis
so, that the unrepentant must fry
below; but isn’t there some way
you can see, that he may enter
who's dear to met
Ami say, St. Peter, it seems to
me, this Gate isn't kept as it
ought to be. Stand by the open
ing there and not sit down in that
easy eh air.
And say, St. Peter, my sight, is
dimmed, but 1 don't like the way
your whiskers are trimmed; they
are cut too wide and outward toss;
they’d look better narrow, cut
straight across.
Well, we must be going, our
Grown to win, so open, St Peter,
and we'll come in.”
St. Peter sat quiet and stioked
his staff, but in spite of his office
he had to laugh; then said, with a
fierce gleam in his eye: "Who’s
running this Gateway, you or If”
And then he rose in his statue
tall, and pressed a button against
the wall and said to an imp, w ho
came all aglow, * l Escort this wom
an to the regions below.”
The man stood still as a piece of
stone, stood sadly, gloomily, there!
alone; a life-long settled idea he;
liad, that his wife was good, and
that he was bail.
He thought if the woman went 1
down below, that he most surely
would have to.go; that if she went
to the regions dim, there wasn’t a
ghost of a show for him.
Hlowly he turned, by habit bent
to follow wherever the woman
went. Ht. Peter, standing on
duty there, olwerved that the top
of his head was bare.
He (silled the gentleman bacl
and said: “Friend, how many
years have you been wed!”
30 years (with a heavy sigh),
and then he thoughtfully,
added, “Why!”
“Thirtyyears with that tongue
so sharp! Oh’ Angel Gabriel,
give him a harp—a jewelled harp
with a golden string. Gabriel,
give him a seat alone, one with a
cushion near to the throne.
Call up some angels to play their
best, let him enjoy the songs an<]
rest.
Bee that on the finest ambrosia
lie feeds, he’s had about all the
hell he needs. It isn’t hardly the
thing to do, roast him on earth,
and the future, too.”
They give him a harp with gol
den strings, a glittering robe, and
a pair of wings, and he said, as
he entered the realms of day:
“Well, this beats cucumbers, any
way.” And so the Hcriptnres
have come to pass. “The last
shall lie first, and the first shall lie
last.”
