Our little town was made very
sad indeed at the death of Rev. T.
P>. M. Hawkins which oceured Sat
urday at 4 o'clock a. m. at the
home of his daughter, Mrs. J. M.
Turner about three miles from
town. Just one week before his
death he left his home here to
make a short visit to his daugh
ter, in his usual health, although
he has been in feeble health for
many years. Arriving he was ta
ken suddenly ill with chola mobus
which was the cause of his death.
It is awful sad to know lie will
come back to his home here no
more, but if we could just see the
home that wo feel satisfied he is in
today, we would be willing to say
that it is best for him to go. He
leaves a wile, three children, five
grand children, to which we ex
tend our deepest sympathy. The
interment was at Hickory Flat.
The Mediation Conferenc e.
The mediaton conference which
opens tomorrow at Niagara Falls,
Ontario, will consider all aspects
of the Mexican problem, the inter
nal strife as well as the issue
between the United States and
Huerta, and will seek through
eveiy diplomatic means to restore
peace and orderly government.
This conference has been brought
about by the good offices of Argen
tina, Brazil and Chili. Its purpose
is warmly approved by the United
States, and it is hoped that in time
the Constitutionalists may lee
brought within its scope. Wheth
er it will succeed or fail is doubt
ful, but there is reason to believe
that it will at least simplify the
present situation.
Huerta, it is reported, has
empowered his representatives at
the conference to eliminate him
should that be necessay to peace;
and it is well known that nothing
short of his elimation will satisfy
the United States or open the way
to agreement among the Mexican
factions. This is at least a hopeful
beginning.—Atlanta Journal.
