PUBLIC SPEAKING.
We are requested by General Lucius
J. Gartrell, Independent Democratic
Candidate for Governor, to state lhat
he will address the people of Decatur
county at the court house in Bainbridge
on Thursday, the 7th of September.
The General is a fine ore or and a
statesman of distinguished ability, and
we hope that a large audience will greet
him on the occasion of his visit to our
town and county.
Let everybody turn out. No haim
ever comes of investigating all tbe sides
to a question.
LETTER FROM Mr. STEPHENS-
The following letter from our distin
guished candidate for Governor explains
itself:
Liberty Harr, 1
CltAWFOHDV: Cl., Ga., 23 Aug ’82 J
lion. E' .ij. E. R Bci.biidye,
Ga—My Dear Sir :—Your letter ol
21st inst. received this a. m. I have
have been deluined closely at homo on
indispensable private business siuce my
return from Washington. Our Supe
rior Court sits n^xt week. As soon
as I can get off from that—svy Wednes
day or Tuesday, I expect to go up to
Atlanta and then fix the programme of
my movements for September. If 1
possibly can, I will go to Cambridge,
but can make no promise now. I will
notify you in time should I take that
place in the course of my travels.
t Yours Truly,
Alexander H. Stephens.
EDITORIAL NOTES.
—Next Tuesday lion. H. G. Turner
-frill feu-neu3^a'Ted,~aud ia Nfiveuiber
he will be re-elected.
—Gov. Colquitt spoke to the natives
at Camilla last Friday, Be is one cf
tho best stump speakers iu Geotgia.
—Our able contemporary of the
Savannah Morning News is begiuning
to “talk right out in the meeting.” He
is solid for Stephens and Democracy.
— On Saturday next the Democracy
of Decatur county will nominate two
Candida.es for Representatives in the
next Legislature. G.cat care should
be taken in the selection of these per
sons, lest they be not elected.
—We have received a long commu
nication from Whigbum, io this county
signed “A Democrat., of Whigham.”
The letter endorses Mr. Geo. A. Wight
and Mr. Rulus A. Connell, as^most
suitable gentlemen to represent Decatur
iu the next Lcgis'ature, and hopes lhat
the Convention will award them the
nomination. We decline to publish the
letter for tho reason tliat it was not ac
companied by the true name of the
waiter. It is a long and well-establish
ed rule of the press to refuse a)l com
munications for publication unless ac
companied by a responsible name—%iot
that we desive to give publicity (o it,
but as an evidence of good faith on the
part of the writer. As to Messrs.
Wight and Connell The Democrat
always did believe that they ar§ two of
the very best men wc have in the
county. ,
THE CONVENTION NEXT SATUR
DAY.
The delegates which are to assemble i
in convention at the court house in this
cito on Saturday, as the representatives
of tbe Democratic party of Decatur
county, have a most important and re
sponsible duty to perform.
That duty will be the nomination of
two candidates to represent Decatur in
tbe next Georgia house of Representa
tives.
The convention, therefore, must act
with due caution and deliberation in
the selection of standard-beareis. Many
good names will be suggested, but all
cannot be nominated.
Only two can become tbe recipients
of tbe the honor from the convention ;
and in deciding upon them several im-
porlent poio's ought to be gravely
considered, viz .•
1. The nominees ought to be Demo
crats in thorough sympathy with the
party.
2. They should be well known
among tbe people for their patriotism,
high character and integrity.
3. They should be popular with tbe
masses, and free from the prejudices
that canker aud fester upon the body
politic.
4. They should have the good of
Decatur county, and its entire people
at heart, and be willing to work in
every honorable way to promote their
interests.
5. And last but not least the nomi
nees should be men of whose election
there can be no doubt, when the ticket
is given to the people.
In conclusion wc would urge upon
the convention to lay every prejudice
aside; and act solely for the best inter
est of tie Dimocraiic party and the
county. And each aspirant who may
he defeated, let him give b : s whole in
fluence to the election of his successful
competitor. T'PJ Democrat which has
battled for Democracy for many years,
stands ready to support tbe nominees.
SAD DEATH bFilR- JAMES S.

A telegram war leceived in the citySat-

ed colt was thrown and instantly killed.
No oilier particulars wereg'ven other than
that the fra otious animal dashed again it a

f illed. Th8 news was heard with great
regret by many fi lends of the deceased,
aod was a great, shock to them Mr. Mtin-
neilvo was Discount Oieik in the Central
Raiiioad 13 nk, and was esteemed for bis
fidelity and cour'esy. He was boin near
Buinbiiuge, Decatur county, was thir.y-
three veu 1 s of age, and leaves a wife, a
daoch er of Colonel George S. Owens, aud
a child, to mom a !rs loss. Mr. Munner-

Swj.i./cli A' ? , 2'J h.
Other than the above, we have re
ceived do particulars of the sad acci
dent which lemiiuated the life of one
of the noblest young gem'emen that
ever lived to adorn mauhood.
James S. Munnevlya was a native of
Deeatur county, the son of our distin
guished fellow-citizen, Hon. Charles J.
Munnerlyn, and was born at tbe old
homestead ten miles south of this city.
In 1S71, if we lemember correctly, be
went to Savannah and entered the em
ploy of the Atlantic & Gulf Railway
Company, since which lime he lias held
various positions of trust and honor in
some of the leading business bouses of
Lhat ci'y city, and at I he time of bis
death filled the office of Discount Clerk
in the Central Railroad Dank. Had
life been spared him he would have at
tained the very h : gbes ( rank as a busi
ness man. —-
In this ooffitnunity be was a general
favorite ; many loved—all admiied and
respected him. Id our opmiou be was
as near pet feet as mac could be. Ex
ceedingly handsome in personal appear
ance, his mind was highly cultivated,
aud bis heart was a diamond pure end
undefiled. lie was quiet, modest, and
uaasuming yet be bad tbe courage of a
lion. During the terrible yellow fever
epidemic which devastated Savannah in
1S76, be never left tbe city but re.,
mained to tbe last soothing the dying,
and succoring the sick and the dis
tressed.
That he'should have met his fine iu
the manner above narraied. is one of
«he my.-.'erious wa vs of Providence, for
he was a most skilhul hotseman ; hav
ing. so to speak, been "reared in the
saddle.”
It is sad indeed to even contemplate
the sudden taking off of one in the
very morning of manhood, when life is
at its bapniest ; yet were we pet milted
to look inti the great Beyond, we
might fiud tbit it is not so uufortunate
for one to die young. That all is well
with our departed fiieDd we verily
believe.
To ihe father whose soul is bowed in
anguish.; to the mother, heart broken ;
(,o the young w.fe whose so* ow ermnnt
be expressed—to the whole faafly of
which he was the light—we teuder our
sincerest sympathy.
