A special from Keokuk, Iowa, says
Heavy rains In central Iowa Thursday
and Friday are sending a flood down
upon prosperous. Missouri farmers
which will ruin many , of them and
cause losses aggregating at a conserv

dollars. There-seems to be

tween Keokuk and Hannibal 800
square miles. The DeB Moines jlvef

'mouth at Keokuk'lriliay; continuing
until hope of safety was abandoned
late.in the day.
A rise of 1 1-2 feet in a short time
at Ottumwa and a further rl$e through
'out its length below the da'pltil *fclty
was prevented from running out freely
by a rise of a foot and a half at Eaven*
port Thursday night; increasing and
coming down rapidly.- The observer of
the weather bureau at .Keokuk, sent
telegraphic warning to all'points' south
to prepare for danger. , . ,
The Egyptian levee, which stood- the
flood Just receding’ after strenudua ef
forts to hold It, is only slightly above
the water now, and the coming flood In

lets the water into hundreds of square

No general strike of the coal miners

declaring It would
to order a general strike.
At,the opening of the convention
{ Saturday morning. "Meiher" Jones whs
given the floor. She made an address
which was enthusiastically applauded
by the delegates. She declared, that
before coming to Indianapolis she had
favored a general strike, but since
coming to the convention she had
be •no hope cached the- opinion that the conclu-
between the 8l<m re actied by the. delegate® to avoid
7T, 7L such a movement was the wisest
course. She urged the delegates to
oppose at the congressional elections
this fall every man who was favorable
to “government by injunction.”
1 The last of .the miners who were on
hand to make provision , for carrying
on the strike la the anthracite field
left the city Sunday for their homes.
Only President Mitchell and one or
t^ro members of the national executive
board remained over.
Tbe care of the natlonal organisation
now will be to see to the collection of
the.defenae fund with which to carry
oh the strike'. Secretary Wilson, who
Is.theflnancial head of.-the union, will
be in charge of this work and will lose
no time. In providing to handle the
sums. It Is believed that all the volun
tary contributions from the various
districts, sub-districts and local organ
isations will be turned into his hands
within the next ten days. These con
tributions are estimated at about $400,-
000. »rm
According , to the estimate of Presi
dent Mitchell, the strikers in the an
thracite field number 150,000, while
the, total pumber of dependents is 750,-
000 and the weekly expense 18*3500,000.
In district No. 17, West Virginia (bi
tuminous), he estimates that there are
25,000 strikers, with 76,000 dependents.
He estimates the revenue for defray
ing strike expenses at ^400,000 and the
revenue from weekly assessments by
districts as follows:. , -
The two Pennsylvania districts, $60,-
000; Ohio, $40,000; Indiana (block),
$4,000; Illinois, $50,000; Indiana (bi
tuminous), $10,000; Iowa, $15,000;
Arkansas an Indian Territory, $7,000;
Kentucky, $10,000; Missouri, $8,000.
Total, $244,000. Estimated public con
tributions (weekly), $250,000. Grand
total weekly Income, $404,-000.
A part of t^ie contribution ‘money
has already been turned in, the Ohio
men Laving handed Secretary Wilson
a check for their $10,000.
... r .. . ~ A systematic method will be adopted
■der water long before the crest of the for canvassing for outside subscrlp-
llood arrived. tions in the large cities. Their exact
plan of raising the subscriptions has
not .been determined upon. -;
It is probable, however, the central
labor unions in all cities where such
organisations exist will be asked to
take charge of the raising of subscrip
tions, which will be forwarded at once
to Secretary-Treasurer Wilson. In
pome of the largest cities of the coun
try. such as Chicago, New York, Phl'a-
the flelphia and others, headquarters will
be> established from which the work
wilt be conducted and committees
will be appointed to make the canvass.
Some aid is expected to come from
the national sbeiaiists* organization.
The distribution of the funds will
be left almost entirely to he offleers
of the anthracite districts. Money
will be sent to them to be usd in re
lieving the dependents.
