THE GRASS WORM..
Some Local Ads-
Published WEDNESDAYS and SATURDAYS.
'PHONE No. 11.
WEDNESDAY. JULY 80th, 1002.
A LARQB INCREASE.
The city of Vienna has made a
wonderful increase in the amount
-of -property returned for taxa
tion since the year 1900. The
-amount returned that year was $aaS,
•000. La t year $415,333. was re
turned, an indreuse of $227,333
over the year previously mentioned.
Of that amount our efficient City
-Clerk and Treasurer, B. M. Wood,
lias collected all but ubout $20, This
is indeed, a very fine showing tor
-our city for the past two years. If
■the increase is in proportion for
the next three years, over one mil-
‘lion dollars worth of property will
he returned for taxation.
When we stop to consider the
•improvenients a»nd new enterprises
(hut ure being erected at present
one would not doubt bnt that the
increase would be as large if not
larger during the next Few years.

It seems that there was some ex
pectation that the heavy rain several
days ago would destroy the grass
caterpillars that recently appeared
in great numbers near the city, and
it was learned yesterday that-the
desired result was not forthcoming.
The grass caterpillar, although a
distinct species of its own, is close
ly related to the cotton caterpil!er v
and is no doubt similar affected by
sunshine and showers. Now, every
farmer who is old enough to have!
had experience with the cotton cat
erpillar or army worm which so
devastated the ^cotton crops in
Georgia for several succeeding years
after the close of tire civil war,
knows that the destroyer flourished
best in rainy weather, and least hi
hot and dry weather—although it
may bo true that a heavy down
pour mixed with hail might destroy
them, but such a storm would prob
ably also destroy the crop. The
rain on Thursday was n«d severe
enough for that, and therefore we
are not surprised that the ravages
and advance of the grass worms
were not checked, They are apt
rathe!* to increase in severity—un
less their natural course is already
nearly run—so long as cool, cloudy,
rainy days continue. August and
September ure the rainy months of
the year, and these are the months
in which the army worm was want
to play havoc with the cotton fie Ids.
