The old year is dying—is dying slow,
And why should we bid him stay?
Hie mission is ended and let him go,
For the new leadeth on to the May.
The old year is dying—is dying slow,
’Twill sopn be time for the toll of the
bell;
He treated us kindly, but let him go,
For the New Year will bless us as well
The old year is dying, but let us not
weap:
He stole some of our joys ’tis .true,
But he gave us some gifts of gladness
to keep,
And buried our sorrows too.'
The old year is dying and let him go,
For we mount one starry step more
In the stairway that leads from the
halls below,
To the shining vestibule door.
Opening into the mansions, so many
and fair.
In the house of our Father on high;
The New Year will carry us nearer there,
And so let the Old Year die.

Be it known untef the “Powers that

But few falls of the year like unto the

Cane grinding and ’possum eeason is

The matrimonial fever in Vienna is
on a boom, and if Madam Rumor i»
correct, the sweet tintinabulations of
wedding bells will be heard to rover
berate over hills and dell many more
times in this vicinity ere 1002 has drawn
to a close.
t t t
Vienna possesses many natural ad
vantages that are far superior to those
of some of her sister cities, and there
is no reason why our benutiful little
town should not grow to be the leuding
commercial city of South Georgia.

We are glad to see the editor of the
News advocating better sidewalks lor
our city. There is no doubt that well
paved and neatly kept streets and side
walks speak for themselves, and too
much stress cannot be laid upon having
and maintaing them. The air of res
pectability nnd prosperity impresses
the stranger Within the gates, and
assures him that here is a town very
much alive and even with times', and
this impression is never wrong. Parsi
mony in this' respect is the antithesis of
econemy, and sooner or later the truth
of this statement will be demonstrated.
t t t.
Without shade trees no city can be
beautiful, and while we have a number
of lovely trees in our town, we need
more of them. This is the proper sea
son to set them out, nnd 'once planted
and properly guarded from destruction,
they require little care and in a few
years will apply recompense for trouble
and money expended.

The spring-time brings the bird and bee,
And all the buds nnd blossoms
But full-time is the time for me,
Because fall-timebriugs the ’possums

’Possum and ’taters are ripe into
hnrvest, and every night now the sound
of the iiunter’s horn is heard abroad in
the land.

It is a pleasure to us to note that our
clever nnd efficient clerk of the court,
J. Frank Powell, is stendily growing
in favor nnd popularity with onr people.
We know of several, prominent men
who have recently “come across’’ nnd
ftre now his wnrm friends nnd supporters
That is, within itself, the best evidence
that could be given that he is “the right
man in the right plnco.”
