THE PANAMA CANAL.
Iris calculated that with good
luck the government will be able
to complete the great Pimuma
canal within seven years. Allow'
jng for epidemics pf sickness,
however, and other drawbacks, the
time is extended to ten years.
About 30,000 workmen will be
employed in tlie construction of the
great waterway who will mostly
come from Jamaica and the West
Indies. These people can with
stand the tropical climate much
better than those who do not live
io it, and for this reason they will
be selected to do the work, ' They
will be paid from 50 to 60 cents
per day, this being the usual
wages paid in those countries.
The canal will be 47 miles in
length and will cost the United
States government $144,000,000.
The bottom width of the canal
will be 150 feet, and the depth'
will be 35 feet throughout. It is
estimated that 5,000.000 tons uf
freight will pass through the canal
the first Year, and then increase
each year thereafter. .
WE CALL YOUR BLUFF.
Georgia’s country press will
compare favorably with that of any
other state in the union. In good
newspapers she stands second to
none.
Macoti has secured the state fair
the next time and it is needless to
key that she will - do things up
brown; she never does things by
liahes.
The Tillman-Gonznles murder
affair has been brought into court
on the application of Tillmon for
bail. He sets up a plea of self-
defense.
The Macon Telegraph speaks
truly when it says the people of
Ueoigia are not worrying them 1
(elves over any presidential booms
of Interested politicians.
Train robbers continue to ply
their uefarious trade in the west
and north-west just as they did
year* ago. The man who can in
vent a device to stand off train
robbers will be a benefactor to the
country.
Just ao long aa Addicks, of Del
aware, is allowed to control the
public affairs of a state we may
expect corruption and dishonesty.
It it strange that honest, decent
men will espouse the cuuse of such
trickster* as Addicks.
The Senate committee having
tender consideration the appoint
ment of the negro, Dr. Crum, to
be collector at the port of Charles
ton, otter a long and bitter fight,
killed the appointment by • vote
of 8 to 6. Tbis 11 certainly bitter
gall and wormwood to Roosevelt.
The efforts of the politician* to
•tir up enthusiasm in Georgia over
the names of Parker and Hearst,
and the statement* made by some
papers that these name* bad arous
ed a great sentiment in this state
are all bosh. The people of old
Georgia are not the kind to chase
off after unknown and untried
politicians just for the sake of be-
i^g the first in the field with a
candidate. At the South it never
allowed to furnish a candidate,
why should she be so forward and
eager to help the North furnish
them? Let them do the "putting
up" act, and then the South can
decide whether or not the i« suited.
We will pay one hundred dol
lars cash for u copy of any paper
that contained the paragraphs that
were on the first page of the Pro
gress last week.—Progress.
Now brother, we call your bluff
We have a paper in our possession
that contains it number of the
identical paragraphs—word for
word—that appeared in your pa.
per last week, and which you
declare were original. They were
printed in that paper before your
last issue ever appeared. Put up
your hundred dollars with any re
sponsible man in Vienna and we
will produce the paper.' We mean
business, Brother Smith, und if
you mean business, put up; if you
dont, shut up.
We hope the United States Sen
ate will stand between the people
of the South and the president in
his negro appointments. It lies
with that budy to say whether or
not tha South shall be throttled by
a gang ol negro office holders. We
believe the Senate has more sense
of justice than the president.
VVe notice hrevier body type is
coming to be almost exclusively

Not so very long ugo long primer
was the "only thing” with’ coun
try printers, but general sentiment
seems to have turned to brevier all
along the line. Many papers still
use primer for their editorial mat
ter, but it is gradually giving way

Germany’s attitude toward the
attempts of Minister Bowen to
effect a peacablc settlement of the
Venezuelan trouble is provoking
the patience of Uncle Sam to the
breaking point almost. She seems
to care less for an adjurtment than
any of the other parties involved.
The truth is Germany does not
want a peucable settlement. She
is itching all over for a go at this
country, and in the mix»up she
would like to swipe a South Amer-
lean republic or two, but she lacks
the nerve to put her withes into
execution. It will come sooner or
later, however, and Uncle Sam
had best prepare for it.
Adolph Ochs, who hat so re
cently appeared as one of the most
brilliant stars in metropolitan
journalism, is an example ot what
push and brains can do. He began
hit newspaper career at Chatta.
nooga by publishing, with his
brother, a smalt weekly puper
called the Times, which they later
changed into a daily, and by their
grit and energy they made it the
leading daily paper in East and
Middle Tennessee. Not being
satisfied with just one paper, Mr.
Ochs set out to find new worlds to
conquer, and going to New York,
he soon was in possession of the
New York Times. Here his great
newspaper talent was applied to
good purpose, and lie put new life
and some enterprise into that pa
per. Recently he purchased the
Philadelphia Times for a round
million. When be started on tbis
brilliant newspaper career he was
only a poor Jew boy, possessing
nothing.
